Far From Home

This page follows on immediately from the previous one that I shared. That one showcased a view from Mt Floyen, above the city of Bergen, and this signpost was nearby. It's one that points to various cities around the world with their distances, and I took photos from two directions in order to capture as many destinations as possible.

Sketch 20
I will have a lot of pages with 6x8 photos in this album so I wanted to do something other than sticking these two next to each other to make another 6x8 block. I turned to Shimelle Laine's Sketch to Scrapbook Page series for her Sketch 20 which used two angled photos on a background made up of several patterned paper pieces.

That paper-pieced background is something that I did on my Leaving Dover page so I'm glad that I have been able to repeat it again here. In fact, the globe paper here is the piece that I gutted from the middle of that page.

Love this View

We've been to Bergen a couple of times before, so we had a clear plan for what we wanted to do in our time there. We caught the funicular up Mt Fløyen, one of seven mountains surrounding the city, in order to explore some of the hiking trails there.

This page has a photo from the viewing platform near the top station of the funicular, which I printed at 6x8. I wanted a page design that was substantially different from my title page for Bergen (which also has a 6x8 photo) so I chose to scraplift my Málaga page from last year.

It ended up being an incredibly close scraplift as I repeated the chipboard clouds and used a floral scrap from the old page on the new one too. The main differences were to nudge the photo to the right a bit, and to use a simple banner sticker as my title.

Bergen

Stavanger
Having made a 'sub-title' page for our day in Stavanger recently, I now have a blueprint for similar pages for the rest of the ports that we visited on our Norwegian cruise. I use these to divide my albums into sections and mark the transition from one day/port to the next as I don't date all the pages in a travel album.

So, I've made another version for Bergen, using different papers but sticking to the colour scheme that I chose at the start, one based on Pinkfresh Studio's Out and About collection.

Quietly Quaint

I'm in Stavanger (Norway) for the fourth post in a row; this time it's a page for the old town, a pretty area of white wooden houses which have been preserved as part of the city's heritage.

My page is a scraplift of one by Jen Schow which was Scraplift Challenge #19, posed by the Scrap Squad on Facebook a few weeks back.

I've taken Jen's alternating paper strips and pale background, but swapped her four photos down to three, with one running across both paper strips. Changing the photos also led to me moving the title and journalling compared to the original, and I placed that title on a circle of paper which was partly inspired by Jen's large floral cluster in a similar place.

I have one more page to make for Stavanger, but I missed one of the photos off my last order so that will have to wait a while. I'll be moving over to Bergen for my next post.

Stavanger

Third page from Stavanger, and I've gone back to the start of our visit, our arrival in the port, for a 'sub-title' page. I normally make one of these for each port on a cruise to split up the album into 'chapters' and mark the transition from one day/location to the next.

My page design comes directly from Shimelle Laine's A Most Magical Scrapbook class, and is based on a sketch for two 4x6 photos. I've used a 6x8 instead and added a 3x4 photo in some of the open space at the bottom of the page.

I've printed similar photos for all the other ports too, and intend to repeat the same layout with different papers for each one.

There's no journalling yet on this page, and I'm not sure whether I want to add any. I'll make a final decision on that later in the album-making process.

Watching

The Original Page
Another page from Stavanger today, because it was another where I had a small number of photographs to choose from. I used two 4x6 photos of a watch tower, where fire watchmen used to be stationed 24 hours a day, an essential precaution in a city made mostly from wood. My third, smaller photo is a statue of one of the watchmen.

I scraplifted myself for this page, making a new version of a Cornish page from earlier in the year, but with a few tweaks to the paper layers.

Broken Column

I'm making random pages for my cruise album at the moment, and this page from Stavanger features an art installation by Antony Gormley called Broken Column. This consists of 23 life-sized statues spread out across the city, with each one placed so that its feet are at the same height as the previous one's head, forming an imaginary column of stacked figures.

We saw five of the figures which made the choice of photos quite easy, and I worked with literal broken columns of patterned paper on my page with my five photos and a journalling block.

When I was looking at letter stickers for my title I found some that looked stencilled, but they were too small and the wrong colour. However I felt that the broken letters of a stencil fitted my theme so I downloaded a font and cut some on my Silhouette.
