The Weir Wolf Wins Again

Back to the Paralympics and I used Sketch 9 from Shimelle's Sketch to Scrapbook Page video series for David Weir in the men's wheelchair marathon, winning his fourth gold medal of the Games. I liked that the sketch focused on one large square of patterned paper as it gave me the chance to use one of the Union flag papers in the Portobello Road collection that I have been using throughout my album.

I used a transparency down the middle of the page rather than more patterned paper so that you can still see the flag. I'm nearly at the end of the album, and I haven't used the transparency before, but I have used red spotty paper so I don't think it will look out of place. If it does, I can go back and add smaller pieces to earlier pages. I plan to go through the whole album anyway and add bits to any pages that seem 'lacking' in some way. There is also a page that I want to re-do as it jars with me every time I flip through the pages that I have done so far.

U Heart Curry

I'm a week late in sharing my page for last week's Team Challenge at UK Scrappers, but better late than never. Wonky gave us a sketch to use, and asked us to include a stamped image, plus buttons and ribbon or trim.

I was deep into Paralympic scrapping last week and I came across two photos of my daughter in the Indian restaurant that we visited in Brick Lane after we watched the wheelchair marathons. My husband took the photos as she was scraping out the serving dish.

I wanted to use spicy colours and started from a photo mat from a stack that I am keeping on my desk in the hope that I will use them up. The rest of the papers came from my scraps box and ended up being not so spicy after all. I stamped a part frame around the top right of my photo mat and also used a date stamp near the title.

It's a Small World

It's been a slow week for scrapping and I've had to push myself to do this week's Team Challenge at UKScrappers, even though the criteria suit my style.  Woozle asked us to scrap photos of a building or place rather than a person, to use at least three photos (with one being at least 4x6), and to do something creative for the title rather than using alphabet stickers.

I actually found that my photos of places fell into two groups: places where I had a pair of photos, or places where I took so many photos that I want to do a double page, and I'm not in the mood for double pages at the moment. I ended up going back to 2000 for four 4x6 photos of the Model Village in Bourton-on-the-Water, which I decided not to crop or resize.

My four photos take up 2/3 of my page, and I took the opportunity to fill the remaining space with two pretty 2x12 paper strips that I have had for years. I used some rub-ons that are even older for my title.

While posting this one, I realised that I haven't posted my page for last week's challenge yet. Look out for that tomorrow.

Cheering on Team GB

The vast majority of my Olympic and Paralympic pages have been singles, as I focused on different aspects of each session. However, the swimming races began to blur together as the evening went on and there wasn't really anything to separate them into different pages so I decided on a double.

My main memories are of the red hats that made our swimmers easy to spot and the noise when any of them was competing, whether they had a chance of a medal or not. This lead to the title of my page as I decided to focus on the British swimmers. I grouped photos from various races on separate coloured mats and spread them in two rows across the whole double page. I've done a lot of 'grid' pages in this album and I wanted to get away from these by tilting each piece slightly and adding extra random strips across the top and bottom.

House of Flags

I'm nearing the end of our experiences at the Paralympics now, and I'm mentally planning out how the last pages will fit together in terms of singles and doubles. I've realised that I need an extra single page before I move on to the Aquatics Centre.

I've picked a couple of photos of an artwork/sculpture in Parliament Square called House of Flags. This was made up of 206 interlocking wooden rectangles for the flags of all the Olympic countries.

I used my own blog for inspiration for this page, scraplifting this layout from last summer.

Rainbow Stadium

I have another opportunity now to combine my Paralympic scrapping with a challenge, which makes me happy. Scrap Whispers' Challenge #132 is to 'Scrap a Rainbow' and as we were leaving the Olympic Stadium last September, it was being lit up in a series of different colours.

I printed off my photos, and had a play with rows or columns of photos, but I really wanted to get across the idea of a continuous series of colours, so I settled on putting my photos in a circle:

I ended up keeping the page fairly simple, with a circle of patterned paper at the centre, some doodling and glitter dots. I messed around with using different coloured mats for the photos or adding coloured embellishments to them, but I was happier without them on the page.

(Yellow) Mascot Trail

Last summer dozens of decorated Olympic and Paralympic mascots were spread across London, with six trails to follow. We managed to see all of them, and this was the final trail we completed - the yellow one around East London.

I filled the page with rows of photos plus yellow letters for the yellow trail and I couldn't make enough space for my journalling, so it opens up from the panel in the top right of the page. I'll cut a split in the page protector, so it can be opened easily.

T54 5000m

This is my last page from inside the Olympic Stadium. The finale of the evening was the men's 5000m wheelchair race with David Weir. This was the first gold medal of the four that he won.

I decided to use another of Shimelle's sketches in her Sketch to Scrapbook Page series. This is Sketch 4 which I have used previously, but this time I kept a bit closer to the original with multiple paper strips and labels plus a large union flag die cut:

The Flame

Continuing with my Olympic & Paralympic album, I have a single good photo of the paralympic flame burning in the stadium. I wasn't sure how to scrap it so I had a run round various blogs for inspiration and settled on using Sketch 5 from Shimelle's Sketch to Scrapbook Page video series.

Long Jump Medallists

I'm trying to stick with my Olympic and Paralympic album, rather than get distracted by challenges. However, the latest scrap map at Creative Craft World allowed me to combine the two. Sue's sketch was designed for two photos and a journalling block but I've switched things around to use three photos and journal directly in the background.

We saw three field events in the athletics and I've written about all of them on the page, but my photos are from the long jump competition.

Blade Runner

Oscar Pistorius, the Blade Runner, was one of the big names of the Paralympics last summer. I'd planned to give him a page in my album and despite recent events I decided to go ahead with that plan. We saw the 200m final where he was beaten by Alan Oliveira and it was a story that I wanted to record.

I used a large photo from before the start, where I have Pistorius' back view directly and his face on the large screen in the stadium, and I picked four smaller pictures and placed them in filmstrip frames to tell some of the story of the race.

Sprints

Once upon a time, I was making a scrapbook about the Olympic and Paralympic Games last summer. Then I let other projects take my time and attention, and my album has been lying lonely and unfinished on a shelf. Recently my thoughts have kept returning to this album, and I want to get on and finish it. We had tickets to four sessions of the paralympics and we also went up to London for some of the free events.

I am doing the whole album on kraft cardstock with a limited palette of papers  and mostly red or black letters. Limiting my supplies like this made the pages I did last autumn quite quick to produce. I was working more-or-less chronologically and I'd got up to our evening of paralympic athletics in the Olympic Stadium.

The early part of the evening was occupied with various classes of sprint finals, and we saw Libby Clegg win gold for Great Britain in the T12 100m.

Bring out the Big Gun

I made this page a few weeks ago as part of the team scraplifting game at Scrap Whispers, but I couldn't share it at the time. Three teams played the game; each team started from the same page and scraplifted the previous person's page in turn ending up with three very different pages at the end.

I used two photos of a coastal defence gun at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford for my page, the third in a trio of pages from the day. The first two pages were Duxford and See the Spitfire Fly, and I used the remainders of the same papers. In particular the large piece of spotty paper was a section gutted from the Spitfire page.

I was scraplifting Sherri's page (right). I kept the two landscape photos and the vertical title, but matted them together. I straightened the edges of the horizontal paper and added borders to the vertical paper to bring in a bit more of the yellow colour.

The full chains of pages have now been published and can be seen on the Scrap Whispers blog:

Land's End

This page forms a pair with the previous one as I was struck by the similarity between sketches 16 and 20 from the Sketch-a-Thon at My Sketch World. Both have rectangular panels of paper (vertical or horizontal) layered with a circular piece; I used number 20 for my last page, and I'm working with Sketch 16 for this one.

I picked pieces from my scrap box which have a beach or nautical theme and matched them to photos from Land's End. I have a few extra panels on this page compared to the sketch as I had to work with the size of the scraps as they were. I also wanted to separate the blue circle from the blue background. I was planning to use the same alphabet here as on the previous page, but I was out of Ls and had to make a change.

Ship Ahoy

I went AWOL for a while this week, but I'm back with my last two pages from the Anniversary Sketch-a-Thon at My Sketch World.

I was rummaging through my scraps box recently when I realised that I had a lot of pieces with a beach or coastal theme. I decided to use up some of these with three photos from Land's End and two similar sketches for two complementary pages.

The first page is from the final sketch - number 20.
