I'm using up one of the starting point pages that I made recently, finishing the page with photos of (some of) the Twilight Crafts Design Team at our weekend crop in May. I printed three photos, sized to fit the yellow mat in the centre of the page, and placed my fussy-cut camera in the gap.

I'd originally placed three branding strips at the bottom-left of the page to reflect the line of hearts at the top-right, but I've removed them now as it was the best place for my title which didn't quite fit on the strips. I'd kept a journalling card back when I made the starting point, and I've used half of it here.

Starting Points with Cocoa Vanilla Studio

I made my last page using two collections from Cocoa Vanilla Studio, Daydream and These Days, which I've always stored together as they mix and match quite well. While making that page, I realised just how little I had left, so I decided to make a 'Starting Point' page to use the rest up. That's a term I've pinched from Shimelle Laine for a page I start with no photos in mind, and return later to finish it off. I have a little bundle of these, but I do generally come back to them sooner or later.

I had a few larger scraps but no 12x12 pieces left so I pulled in a piece of Bazzill cardstock for my background. My largest scraps were the floral and the stripe; after shuffling them around with some of the smaller pieces, I placed them vertically with two scallop print pieces between them to form a third column. I overlapped two smaller scraps for a photo mat, imagining either a 4x6 or two 3x4 photos in the space and fussy-cut a floral piece to sit on the right-hand side. Finally, I took all the smallest scraps, die-cut a pile of tags and tucked them in a line between the scalloped and striped papers. I still have a few pieces left from a cut-apart sheet; I'll either add them to the page when I choose the photos or keep the labels and bin the others.

And I also had only a few pieces left from Storyteller so I decided to finish that off too. With no 12x12 sheets left, I used a cardstock background again and filled it with a collage of the largest scraps. I layered a strip of hearts at the top and three branding strips over the bottom part. I chose the yellow to be my photo mat and tucked a few strips in on either side. I fussy-cut the camera which I will definitely use and I have some labels and a journalling card left, some of which I will use if I can once I have the photos.

Starting Point Pages

Starting Points are a term I pinched from Shimelle Laine, pages that I start without any photos in mind and come back to finish them off later. I generally make them either to kill off collections or to thin out my scraps box a bit. This time, they've all come from my scraps box:

Alphabetical
This one started from two ancient pieces of letter-printed paper, one black and one white. They are bright and bold, and unlikely to be pulled out to match anything else. The white one was about 6x12 so I used it as half my background, paired with a red stripe, and layered the black one on top. I then pulled out as many quiet patterns as I could in matching colours, cut them into boxes and layered them up, tucking the green piece in between my two alphabet prints to separate them.

Geometrics

This page started from an 8x12 scrap which I thought was Basic Grey, but it has its branding strip which says it's from a French company called 4heures37; this dates it to the era when I had a kit subscription, probably 10 years ago. I placed this piece in the top two-thirds of my page and filled the bottom third with strips from coordinating scraps.

Pink and Brown

My 'starter scrap' this time is from Basic Grey, brown with pink swirls, and with a 2008 date printed on it. I pulled the three pink papers (floral, cameras and polka dot) to go with it, then tracked down a suitable dark brown paper to fill the rest of the 12x12 space. The polka dot paper isn't stuck down yet as I'll decide how to use it when I finish the page. I can also pull in more of the second brown paper if I need to.

Blue and Yellow

All the previous pages have started from scraps that were 12" long, which I used as part of the backgrounds. This time I had an 11" square of blue swirly paper which I placed in the middle of a failed mixed media piece, covering up almost all that I had done before. I added more blues and some soft yellow, but I'm not sure I like the results.

Bo Bunny Shabby Princess

I'd started this process with the largest scraps, but struggled with the blue and yellow page because the blue was all I had to start it off. So I changed tack for the next one and started with a multi-coloured print. I had a stripy scrap from Bo Bunny Shabby Princess, found two more from the same collection and built from there. I haven't stuck down the central pieces so I can rotate the photo mat if I need to later on.

Will I finish them? Past experience says that I will, but it may take some years for the right photos to come along. If I don't, I haven't really lost anything as these scraps were being wasted before anyway. I'll add links here later when I have finished pages.

Pages from Starting Points

I sometimes make 'starting point' pages, a term I have taken from Shimelle, pages that I start without photos and finish at a later date. I do this either in order slim down my scraps box or to kill off a collection pack. And, eventually, they do generally get used even if that's years later, like these two pages.

89. Girls' Night Out
I started this one back in 2016, one of two pages that I started with the remnants of Basic Grey's What's Up collection.  I planned it for a single 4x6 vertical photo and it's taken eight years to get one that suits the colour scheme. I finished it using the Girls Night Out cut-file from Twilight Crafts which I backed with some of the scraps that I had kept, before fussy-cutting some leaves and a flower as embellishment.

90. #Boyznite

My second page is only five years old, and was started with an assortment of blue and green pieces from my scraps box. I cut down the blue paper with the writing on as it wasn't completely right for the page once I had decided to use it with this photo, and tucked in a journalling card to the side. I based the embellishment clusters around three punched circles that I had kept and finished off two packs of puffy stars.

Fabulous Fridays

Now that Covid restrictions are being lifted here, we've actually been places and done things for the 2021 album. I recently got a batch of photos printed and I'm hoping they bring my mojo back.

This first page was already part done; it started off as a scraplift challenge back in 2017, but I didn't have a photo to finish the page at the time. I put it to one side until I did, but that's taken much longer than I originally thought it would. 

My new photo is a selfie from a lunch with friends to celebrate my birthday and the journalling is about how we're allowed to meet in person again now. I used a couple of flairs from Dotty About Flair, including a coffee cup which I've been hoarding because we normally meet up on Fridays for coffee and a natter.

40 Years

My 'Starting Point'

Last year, I lightened my scraps box by making some 'starting point' pages, pages that I start off from a co-ordinating pile of scraps, layered up in a pleasing way, ready for a photo to be added later.

Normally I keep these pages as they are and just add more when I finish them, but on this occasion I'd left a hole to be covered by a photo and the photo I wanted to scrap was an old one and too small for the space.

I managed to dismantle my page without damaging any of the papers; I did tear the surface of the cardstock background, but just flipped it over and started again. This time I ran the red scalloped paper vertically, cut the florals down and moved them closer together, stitched a large circle, and added lots of extra layers.

Some of the extra layers came from another moodboard challenge at For the Love of Pretty Paper. Although it was a 'Sea of Green', and we had to use some green, there was no need for a monochrome page. I initially took inspiration from the various plants (hence my return to the starting point page with the floral paper), and then went back to it to see what other elements I could include, such as the stripes from the straws and some polka dot paper.

I also combined this with a challenge from Hey Little Magpie to include stitching on a page. I've seen some lovely chain-stitching on pages recently and decided to try it for myself. It does look pretty, but I'm not sure whether it was worth the extra effort over back-stitching.

School Days are Over

Another of For the Love of Pretty Paper's cybercrop challenges gave me another opportunity to finish off a 'starting point' page. This time we were asked to use triangles on a page for the 'Sandwiches' challenge, and I had a page background ready that I'd made when I was experimenting with my Silhouette Portrait a while back. 

I went to some theme park photos which match the colours of my papers, but they were quite old and really didn't work with the stark white background. 

Flipping through the same album, I picked a couple of photos from my last day at school, more than 30 years ago. They were originally about 4"x5" and I moved them round the page A LOT, before deciding to add a larger triangle to the page (even though it would cover some of my existing smaller triangles). Following that the rest of the page fell into place - crop and mat the photos, title along the side of the triangle, extra strip of paper on the left edge, journalling on strips alongside the top photo and embellishments in opposite corners.

Another of the challenges in For the Love of Pretty Paper's birthday party cybercrop was 'Musical Chairs' which asked us to create a repeating pattern. 

Some time ago, I made a 'starting point' page with a mosaic of hexagons cut from the scraps of a 6x6 pad, and that was still sitting around my craft space so I decided to finish it off for this challenge.

The blue and yellow feel 'beachy' to me and I had always intended this to be a single photo page with the photo covering the empty space in the mosaic, so I searched my old photo albums and found one of my brother that would work for this.

I matted the photo on a scrap of denim paper that was wider than the photo, and filled the gap with a few pieces from the same paper pad. I'd originally added a couple of yellow enamel dots to the page (the end of a pack, I'm sure) but I preferred to have three and managed to find another that matched before adding some blue ones too.

One of the early challenges in the recent 'Scrap in Colour' event over at For the Love of Pretty Paper was a simple one to use a single-coloured background. I took the opportunity to use up one of my 'starting point' pages, pairing it with old photos of my cousins. I'd previously made most of this page to kill off a collection so just needed to add photos, title, journalling and embellishment to finish it off.

Looking Good

It's been a long while since I made a couple of 'Starting Point' pages with the leftovers from some holiday scrapping. These are base pages that I start without a photo in mind and then store until something comes up that suits the started page.

I was flicking though them recently and realised that the pinks and blue-greens on this one would suit the 'Opposites Attract' challenge from For the Love of Pretty Paper, where we were asked to use opposite colours on the colour wheel.

I had an assortment of photos from this year printed before the cybercrop started, including this one of my daughter and her boyfriend at a formal dinner. With all the paper layers already on place, it didn't take long to add photo, title and a few embellishments.

We Dare You!

A little while back I made a pile of 'starting point' pages from my scraps box, and it didn't take long for me to use up the first one. I was actually looking for photos for another of these pages when I found a pair that would work better with this one.

The pictures are from 1990 when I was at university and a group of us went to the beach one afternoon, where someone dared one of the group to swim in the sea ... in March.

I matted the photos on a scrap of cardstock and added an extra paper layer (also a scrap) behind them to give my title a calmer background to sit against. The circles of stars are one die-cut cut into three pieces and I added more stars to each piece.

Starting Point Pages from Scraps

I've always limited myself to one pizza box for my paper scraps, and when it's full I make kits from the pieces in an attempt to clear some space. However, there are some bits in the box that have been there for years because they never match enough other papers to form a kit. I'm changing strategy for this year, starting off a second box for new scraps and at the end of this year I plan to jettison anything that is left in the original box. 

I've been looking through my scraps box for papers for most non-cruise-album pages this year and have cut into hardly any new sheets but the box isn't going down very fast so I decided to make some 'starting point' pages; pages started from a coordinating set of scraps, layered up in a pleasing way without any major thought about the photos that will go with them.

The first page was based around an ancient blue spotty paper from Cherry Arte (labelled 2006 though I can't have had it that long since I didn't start scrapbooking until 2008). I picked out various blue and green papers to go with it and layered them on a white cardstock background. I punched the three circles which will hopefully form the start of some embellishment clusters in the future and binned the rest of that scrap.

The next page was based around a couple of scraps from Echo Park's Note to Self collection (2012), the numbers print and the diagonal stripes. I matched those with the checked and polka dot papers and used a paper with similar colours from Shimelle's first American Crafts collection for the background. 

I started this page from the half-sheet of floral patterned paper and trawled through my box for coordinating pieces. They were mostly quite small so I ended up layering a few strips alongside a circle. The background comes from the same paper pad as the floral and I added a discarded branding strip between the two. Finally, I punched a few stars to form part of the embellishments when I finish this page.

This is the simplest of the pages I started, made with three scraps and the month card from a Studio Calico kit. I really like the floral pieces, so hunted for reds and greens to go with them but didn't find much. Obviously I will have to position my photo(s) to cover the hole in the middle when I finish this page. The heart isn't stuck down yet, but it matches so well and has been in my scraps box for eight years (since it was discarded while making this page). 

So, my scraps box is a little lighter now, but still quite full. There are a few papers in there that I really don't want to bin so I shall continue to look through the box for every page and attempt to tuck in as many pieces as possible.

Great Little Engines

I'm sharing another page today that I created by pairing up a 'starting point' with some old photos. I started off this page some time ago in order to kill off an Echo Park collection pack, and then left it for the right photos.

The ones I picked are from the Bluebell Railway in East Sussex, which I visited very many times as a child. I had two photos of the engines from this visit, so matted them together and then tucked in a punched strip next to the photo block. I hadn't stuck down the journalling card or all the circles previously so I rearranged those and fussy cut a camera from one of the scraps I'd kept from the collection.

My title gave me a lot of trouble as I couldn't find the right size, colour and font for the space available. I ended up using some small tiles above the journalling card, as being the best fit, but I'm still not entirely happy with it.

Stonehenge

I'm waiting on order of new photographs before I can continue with my cruise album, so I've decided to try and use up some of the 'starting point' pages that I've made previously. I do these to finish off collections or try out ideas, and then put them aside until I have suitable photos, and I have a few now piled up. I spread them all out on my desk and flipped through an older photo album to see if any would match up.

On this occasion, I paired a couple of photos from Stonehenge with a page I started to use up Fancy Pants' Little Sport collection. The photos were only 5" x 4" but were still a little large for the paper panels I'd stuck down; however they had a lot of grey sky so I cropped them down and matted them on a scrap of cardstock.

Once the photos were in place, it didn't take long to add a title, journalling, a sprinkling of mist and some stars and enamel dots as embellishments.

Inspired by Triangles

I recently saw a scrapbook page on Facebook which used a triangles cut file background. It's a commercially available file (DIY Quilt from The Cut Shoppe), but I was sure I could create something similar for myself and decided to give it a go.

I have a Silhouette portrait which is only 8" wide so I couldn't make an exact replica, but I came close and used pages from a 6x6 pad to back it with. I layered the cut piece over my 12x12 and added a torn paper strip to the join

I don't know what page I will use this for yet. I really made it for the challenge of creating the file and the joy of playing with pretty paper.

Starting Point Pages

I still have a few pages left to make from 2014 but they're feeling like a chore, so I've diverted into playing with pretty paper in a different way.

I don't often buy a whole collection but when I buy a few sheets from one I keep them together for as long as possible, in a ziplock bag on the shelf. Some of these bags are down to scraps now so I've decided to clear them out by making a few 'starting point' pages, pages where I just cut those scraps into boxes (or circles) and layer them up in a pleasing manner ready to add the photos later. 

The first page I made used Dear Lizzy Neapolitan by American Crafts from 2012. I had no whole sheets left so added a pink heart print that I think is from a Pebbles baby collection. I had decent size pieces of the floral and cream papers so started from a broad L-shape then layered the smaller pieces and some branding strips over them. When I finish off this page I'll make sure that my photos cover the gap between the jar and the pink lined paper. I still have a piece of jar print paper left but I've cut it into individual jars and added them to the drawers where I keep my embellishments sorted by colour.

Next up is Little Sport by Fancy Pants, also from 2012. My largest piece was a zig-zag print, still 12x12 but with a couple of pieces cut from the edges, so I cut down a plain paper to go over it leaving the zig-zag as a border on two sides. The only other piece of significant size was the stripe so I used that as a potential photo mat and layered most of the other pieces behind it. The blue was already two pieces (which I trimmed to be the same width) and I cut and stretched the zig-zag and spot papers to go above and below the stripe. I then took some of the smaller scraps and made a small cluster on the left where the plain paper meets the zig-zag background.

My third page uses This & That Charming by Echo Park; it was another 2012 release and this time I did buy the collection pack. The largest piece I had left was about 11x12 as I had previously cut a strip from it. I backed the gap with a 12" long scrap and filled it in with a border sticker and some strips cut from a yellow paper. Then it was a case of cutting pieces into rectangles and layering them up; the book print is two pieces so I made sure to place a strip over the join. I'd previously punched a number of circles so I pulled them in here, but only the ones at the top with the green tab are actually stuck down. Once I've chosen some photos I'll stick the journalling card and the other circles under and around them. I still have a number of stickers left so I'll be able to add some of those later too.

Echo Park's Dots & Stripes Christmas (2011) has had a different treatment; it's never really worked for me as a collection in itself because most of the papers are single colours. I've added the red and brown full sheets to the organiser where I store single papers by colour, and added the snowflake patterned ones and the scraps to my bag of mixed winter-themed papers. I've also cut up the sticker sheet and added the pieces to my embellishment drawers.

The last starter page for today is based on Daily Stories by Teresa Collins (2014) but I only ever had about four papers. There weren't enough pieces left for a page so I added a background from the original Shimelle collection and some other papers from my scraps box. The butterflies and meshed circles prints are TC, I've binned some tiny pieces of a floral print and I just have some of a cut-apart sheet left now. I'll use some of the cut-apart when I finish the page and then turn the rest into embellishment pieces.

I've really enjoyed making pages in this way for a change and I intend to go through my scraps box soon to make a few more. I have some really lovely papers in that box that deserve to be part of a page instead.

A Scraplift Starting Point

Something a bit different today, as I'm sharing an unfinished page. I sometimes make these 'starting point' pages in order to kill a kit or collection, but this one came from the recent game of Scrap Whispers at UKScrappers. 

The third page that I was given to scraplift had these lovely sprays of flowers on the diagonal, which drew me to a large scrap of Teresa Collins paper with a floral that was perfect for fussy-cutting. 

However, having ploughed through 30 years of photos I had to conclude that I didn't have any photos to work with the pinks and green of that scrap, and I reluctantly decided to proceed without one for now. I tracked down some matching paper papers from two 6x6 pads and layered them in the middle, tucked my flower sprays into opposite sides, added swirls of gems and spattered the diagonal with silver mist. Looking back at Jan's page, I realised that I had forgotten to stitch that circle, an element I'd intended to keep, and added that too.

I really like this page with its soft colours and delicate flowers; I hope I take a suitable photo before too long, and I have silver letters ready for a title once I get that far.

Dinosaur Court

I'll admit that I was initially flummoxed when I received Cindy's page to scraplift in the third week of our Chinese Whispers game at Mind the Scrap as it's not my normal style. I left it for a few days hoping that my subconscious mind would work on the problem and decided to break the page down and take some of its elements rather than make a faithful copy.

The first step was to find a similar shaped photo - long and narrow - and I picked one of the dinosaurs in Crystal Palace Park. It had been my Facebook cover photo for a while so I knew it would suit that shape. The subject made me think of Basic Grey's Archaic collection, which has a dinosaur print, but I knew that I had killed it with a 'starting point' page sometime last year. That page had a row of layered scraps across it and I hadn't used it yet, so could this be my chance? I dug it out (complete with the remaining scraps including some tiny pieces of dinosaur paper) and decided that this would work perfectly if I added some spotty vellum above and below the papers.

I removed the smaller pieces that I had stacked on the left, and added more paper pieces to the right. I matted my photo, and cut a couple of tags from the dinosaur print paper. Having positioned the photo (which is actually a pocket with four more inside) I surrounded it with the tags, more scraps, stickers and chipboard frames, throwing everything I could find at the page. 

It's not an exact copy of Cindy's page, but it's definitely related; not my usual style, but I really like it. That's one thing I love about playing Chinese Whispers with scrapbook pages, the way it forces you to do something a little differently.

A Hexagons 'Starting Point'

Now that I've practically finished my Norwegian cruise album, I have a small stack of coordinating scraps left over, and I've put some of them to use on a 'starting point' page. These are pages that I start without a photo in mind, and then complete at a later date.

For this one, I pulled out all the scraps from the My Mind's Eye Follow Your Heart pad and used my Big Shot with a small hexagon die to cut as many as I could. A lot of the scraps were 2x6 (where I'd cut a 6x6 paper down to fit a 4x6 pocket) and I could get 4 per piece from them, using both sides for different patterns where both would work. Having arranged them all on the page, I took a quick reference photo and then removed them all so that I could liven up the white cardstock with a liberal spattering of mist. Once it was dry, I settled down to ink all the hexagons and stick them in place. I then added a few pieces of photo strip washi tape and a couple of leftover enamel dots. I've actually taken this page a little further than I normally would for a starting point, but it felt right to do it.
