Mr & Mrs

I've scrapped all photos from my brother-in-law's wedding day and evening now, but I need one more page to fill a gap before some doubles from the last day of sight-seeing we did in Malaysia.

I picked my favourite shot from their wedding photoshoot (held a few weeks earlier), printed it at A4 (210mm x 297mm) and matted it on red cardstock to be 12" tall for this page. Shimelle made several pages with 12x8 photos in her A Most Magical Scrapbook class, and I scraplifted one of them here for a page with two diagonal clusters of layers, one large and one small.

I'm still sharing pages from the Easter Cybercrop at For the Love of Pretty Paper; the challenges were all chocolate-themed and this was for "Picnic" which was to scrap an outdoors photo.

Cake and Champagne

Having made a few wedding pages now and planned out the rest, there are going to be nine, one double and eight single. It's a crazy number but there were so many parts to the day that I want to record. 

There was a big stage in the hotel ballroom and the bride and groom used it for the speeches, cutting the cake and pouring a fountain of champagne. Three photos on this page, which is a scraplift from A Most Magical Scrapbook.

And, of course, it's another page for the chocolate-themed Easter cybercrop at For the Love of Pretty Paper; this is "Twix" which was to use stripes.

Stavanger

Third page from Stavanger, and I've gone back to the start of our visit, our arrival in the port, for a 'sub-title' page. I normally make one of these for each port on a cruise to split up the album into 'chapters' and mark the transition from one day/location to the next.

My page design comes directly from Shimelle Laine's A Most Magical Scrapbook class, and is based on a sketch for two 4x6 photos. I've used a 6x8 instead and added a 3x4 photo in some of the open space at the bottom of the page.

I've printed similar photos for all the other ports too, and intend to repeat the same layout with different papers for each one.

There's no journalling yet on this page, and I'm not sure whether I want to add any. I'll make a final decision on that later in the album-making process.

The Giant's Hedge

I came across The Giant's Hedge on a wander round Kilminorth Woods near Looe in Cornwall. According to a local rhyme, "Jack the Giant, having nothing to do, built a hedge from Lerryn to Looe." It's really a 6th century earthwork which has somehow survived to the present day, and was probably the work of a local chieftain.

The photos are very green and brown, and I had the perfect leaf print paper to go with them, but I needed some brighter colours too. Most of the challenges from For the Love of Pretty Paper's 'Scrap in Colour' cybercrop have been colour-based including one which linked certain personality traits with different colours and asked us to pick the one which best matched us. Mine was yellow, and I paired it with red as looking good with the yellow and brown.

My page design is a scraplift of one of Shimelle Laine's pages in her A Most Magical Scrapbook class, which originally ran in 2017 but I am still putting it to good use.

City of Churches

We travelled to Porto by metro from the port of Leixões, the subject of my last blog post. We had a list of places to see and things to do, and several of those places were churches, though we only had time for the outsides on this occasion. We also saw quite a lot more that weren't on the list; it really did seem that Porto was a city of churches.

My page design comes from Shimelle's class A Most Magical Scrapbook and is one I've used previously, though not in this album.

Málaga

Back to my cruise album now, where I'll be making 'divider' pages for each city we visited. I've already done Casablanca  and now it's the turn of  Málaga. I plan to use either two 4x6 photos or one 6x8 photo on each one but this is a very common photo selection for me and I don't want my pages to get too same-y. Seeking inspiration, I went back to Shimelle's A Most Magical Scrapbook class and scraplifted one of her pages. The line of circles is something that hasn't appeared before in the album, but it will be easy to repeat them on another page. 

I'd like the photos on these pages to be general views of the cities, preferably taken from the ship as we arrived or departed, and that's what I have here. This was our only rainy day, so I added some clouds to the circles. 

Shimelle's page design was perfect for this month's challenge from Hey Little Magpie, which was just to use a circle somewhere on the page.

I also linked up at Lottie Loves Paper where Sarah set a weekend of challenges recently. I couldn't do many of them but did manage the first one on the Friday evening - three hours to make a page with a patterned paper background, one photo, enamel dots, something blue and at least three stickers.

In Need of Some TLC

I won't be scrapping our cruise chronologically and I'm starting with our third port of call, Casablanca, because its photos fell into specific groups more easily than those from some of the other cities we visited.

One of my sets of photos is from the Parc de la Ligue Arabe and the neighbouring church, the Église du Sacré-Coeur. Both the church and part of the park were behind barriers and appeared to be being renovated, but they have a fair way to go and the impression they left on me was that the area was in need of some tender loving care.

My page design came from Shimelle's class A Most Magical Scrapbook and I used it previously for a page from Reykjavik on our last cruise, but this time I squeezed an extra photo on to the page.

Pseudocraters

I have another page from our tour of Iceland for you today. Pseudocraters form when hot lava flows over wet ground causing the water to turn into steam and explode up through the lava. These ones were formed around 2300 years ago, and they were the final thing we visited on the tour. I picked just two photos for this page, a general view and a close-up of one of the craters.

I started the page using a background that I had previously stuck the spotty vellum to and them abandoned. Several of Shimelle's sample pages from A Most Magical Scrapbook started out with a similar split background and I mostly scraplifted one of them for the rest of my page.

Austurvöllur

Austurvöllur is the main square in Reykjavik, and it borders both the Alþingishúsið (Parliament House) and the cathedral (which I've already scrapbooked here). The Alþingishúsið was the fifth of the photos that I considered when making my Historic Houses page but I thought that it was best scrapped as part of this page with an general view of the square and a close-up of the central statue (Jón Sigurðsson, a nineteenth century campaigner for Icelandic independence from Denmark).

My page design is another one from Shimelle's A Most Magical Scrapbook class. Hers had a 4x3 photo next to the 4x6s, and I originally printed my statue photo at that size but I felt that it dominated the page so I reprinted it at 3x2. 

This is the last page for Reykjavik and I've also finished Olden. I still have a page each to make from Tasiilaq and Ålesund and I've barely touched Akureyri and the trip we took from there so maybe I should focus on that next.

Make It Snappy

I've done a lot of pages with two 4x6 photos for my cruise album, mostly with those photos in a block, and I'm craving more variety. Shimelle mentioned exactly this feeling towards the end of her A Most Magical Scrapbook class and I'm scraplifting this page from her. 

My page actually has four 4x3 photos, but they belong in two pairs and occupy the same space as two 4x6s would. When we were walking on the hillside above Ålesund we found a couple of fallen trees which someone had carved into crocodile heads.

Lego Town

Greenland again today, with a couple of photos of Tasiilaq as we arrived. My first impressions were of a town built from lego, with simple buildings in bright colours scattered across the hillside. My layout came from A Most Magical Scrapbook once again; Shimelle's designs are so useful for pairs of 4x6 photos in the same orientation.

I've mostly been working with Photo Play's Boarding Pass collection for this album, but I did pull out other papers too and this floral just seemed right for this page; it's the first time I've used it and I will ensure that it repeats on other pages. The stamped globe is a motif that has already appeared on a number of pages and I'll be continuing to use that too.

Traditional Turf House

I'm switching over to Greenland for the next couple of pages in my cruise album. This one is from Ammasalik Museum, where they have reconstructed a traditional turf house of the type used as a winter home by the Inuit.

The page design comes from Shimelle's A Most Magical Scrapbook class once again, but this time I'm combining it with a Tic-Tac-Toe challenge from Scrap Our Stash. 

I picked the top row - plaid print, tab(s) and the colour brown. I'm making all the pages for this album on kraft cardstock (brown), the paper collection that I'm using has a plaid print and I have a tabs die that's a recurring item.

I filled my tab with a tiny wood veneer tree, and made a similar cluster across the page. With only two of this tree in my stash, I placed a slightly different one next to the title, and eventually decided that I needed a third 'proper' cluster at the foot of the journalling. With no more trees to hand I picked out an arrow instead.

In Retreat

One of the ports of call on our cruise was Olden in Norway, and from there we travelled to the Briksdal Glacier. We'd visited it before and I've already made a page showing the change in the glacier front in the intervening time (Now & Then). This one is about the changes over a longer period of time - 250 years. There are signs along the path to the glacier that show where the front was in years gone by and I took an un-zoomed photo from each one.

Once again my page layout came from Shimelle's class A Most Magical Scrapbook, and I took the colours and some of the papers from my previous page as they cover a similar subject and will sit next to each other in the album.

I wanted to put the year on each photo, but didn't have enough small number stickers so just wrote them on tiny tickets. This ties in with two recent challenges to use numbers on a page - the November House Challenge at UKScrappers is to feature numbers; and one of the alphabet challenges in the For the Love of Pretty Paper group was N is for Numbers.

Akureyrarkirkja

I'm staying in Iceland for this page, but crossing back to Akureyri. We only had a short time in the town one evening after a day time trip and I set out to visit the church, imaginatively named Akureyrarkirkja which means Akureyri's Church. 

The church stands on a hill, at the top of a flight of steps and was lit up at night which made it easy to find. I ended up with two photos in different orientations which I scrapped with the aid of another of Shimelle's prompts from her A Most Magical Scrapbook class.

Reflections in Tjörnin

I appear to be concentrating on the Icelandic portion of our cruise at the moment. It's not a conscious decision; I'm just picking off the easy pages, the ones where I only took a few photos so choosing which ones to print and scrap is fairly straightforward. 

Tjörnin is a small lake in Reykjavik. We sat here for a rest, my husband did some painting and we walked part way round it. We also took photos of the waterfront buildings and their reflections. I picked out three for this page, from different parts of the lake, and stacked them up in a page design lifted from Shimelle's class A Most Magical Scrapbook. Stacking three photos in a column is nothing new, but I do like the look of the extra paper at the bottom and the camera strip across the join for something just a bit different from my usual designs.

Farið

Back to my cruise album now, and another page from Shimelle's A Most Magical Scrapbook class. She put her photo, title and lots of embellishments on a paper 'shelf', but I ended up with a more paper layers and less embellishments. I also moved my title down the page as adding a journalling card opened up a good space for it alongside. I cut that title on my Silhouette as I wanted to be able to use the correct Icelandic letters.

Farið is a sculpture that I saw on the waterfront in Akureyri; I thought that it looked like a whale's tail but it means Flight and it actually commemorates 50 years of passenger flights in Iceland.

I also entered this page in last week's Weekly Challenge at UKScrappers; I've not done one of these for some time as sometimes the criteria are too specific for my tastes. However Scrapdolly set a good one last week - at least four patterned papers, one photo, cameras, butterflies and some form of stamping (although I didn't manage the butterflies). I stamped and fussy-cut the globe, a motif that's repeating through the album although it doesn't appear on every page.

Hallgrímskirkja

From Reykjavik Cathedral on the last page, I've crossed town to the much larger and newer Hallgrímskirkja for this page. It's a double, and another based on one of Shimelle's pages in her A Most Magical Scrapbook class. 

Shimelle used a long row of six 4x6 portrait photos spanning the width of her double page, but I decided on a more varied selection of sizes and orientations for my photos, and this opened up a gap for my title below the pictures on the right hand side of the page. I cut that title on the Silhouette as I have a scarcity of navy letter stickers.

The photo placement also created two open spaces for embellishment clusters in opposite corners; these are just a mix of paper pieces and die-cut shapes topped with wood veneer geo-tags.

Reykjavik Cathedral

I'm staying with Reykjavik today for this page featuring the Cathedral. The page design comes from the recent A Most Magical Scrapbook class run by Shimelle Laine. She was making a Disney album, but the prompts and page designs are pretty versatile rather than being specifically Disney-esque.

I had three photos of the cathedral, and considered stacking them in a column, but with one picture of the outside and two of the inside, I felt they would be better separated, and this design with three 4x6 photos and an extra 4x6 block worked better than the column.

Shimelle used her extra block for lots of embellishment, but it seemed like an obvious place for my title and journalling with just a little embellishment that I repeated diagonally opposite in a smaller size.

Reykjavik

The problem with starting a new album without much of a plan, is that you don't have much of a plan. Having made my first couple of pages, I was left scrolling through photos and flicking through sketches, waiting for inspiration that didn't strike.

I'm currently taking part in Shimelle Laine's new class A Most Magical Scrapbook and one of her prompts is about making 'chapter dividers' to split an album into sections. This is something that I did for my Canadian Cruise album so it really should have occurred to me sooner. We had five ports of call on our cruise, so I'm going to start with 'title pages' for them; I've printed a 6x8 overview photo of each one and I shall be making five very similar pages.

My page design is loosely based on one from the class, where Shimelle used two 4x6 photos and a 4" strip of paper on a patterned background. My pages will all be on kraft cardstock rather than a pattern, so I've made the top strip wider and added an extra panel down the left. My journalling is in two parts - a few facts under the title and part of the story of the day on the journalling card. Of course that story will continue over a whole series of pages from the day.

I intend to repeat this basic page design four more times, so I cut the title letters on my Silhouette and embellished with stamped and die-cut pieces rather than unique items. This page took a bit of time and fussing to get it right, but now that it's done I have a clear template for the rest. I'll repeat the camera paper strip across the page each time, but I'll change the rest of the colours and patterns to suit each photo.
