Incredible Iceland

Before we went away, I was up to mid-June in my 2026 album, but with a long list of June and July pages to make. Now I'm back, I'm going to work roughly backwards until I meet the pages already made. 

I've started with a summary page for our cruise to Iceland, and returned to a page design I've used several times before - making a cut-file from the country name and backing it with photos from the trip. My background is a map print from Simple Stories and the rest comes from an older travel collection from Photoplay; by coincidence, it's the collection that I bought to document our previous trip to Iceland (in 2017).

David's Day

I've finally finished my album for last year's cruise to Greenland, Iceland and Norway. I didn't work chronologically so this page actually comes about two-thirds of the way through. 

The photos are from the Botanical Gardens in Akureyri and were taken by our adult son who chose to spend his day in the town while we went on a tour. He was very proud of the fact that he'd taken lots of photos for me ready to document his visit as he doesn't normally take many pictures even on holiday.

I initially chose four photos and printed them at 4x3 but you couldn't see the details in all the green so I dropped one and went larger with the others. I have another page in this album with a column of three 4x6 photos, so I tried to make the rest of the page design as different from the other one as possible. I considered several vertical strips of paper to the left of the photos but, looking at all my scraps, I decided to use as many of them as I could in horizontal strips instead.

I've had that acrylic arrow (and some other pieces) in my project box ever since I started this album and it took a challenge from For the Love of Pretty Paper to finally move one from box to page. We have an Alphabet Relay running in the group where we take it in turns to set challenges based on the letters of the alphabet, and this was A for Acrylic.

Restless Earth

This page actually comes earlier in the day than the last two, but I needed to get 'warmed up' on a couple of single pages before tackling a double. These photos come from the 'geothermal field' at Námaskarð, an area with mud pots, steam vents and boiling springs where the soil is too hot and poisonous for anything to grow. We had to be careful where we walked as the surface temperature reaches 80-100°C in places.

The photos needed a mat and looked best on black cardstock, so I cut two 9" wide boxes to sit in the middle of my page. I didn't like the look of the plain cardstock around the edges of the photos, so I filled in those areas with a mosaic of green papers which I've used elsewhere in the album. The blue is a new paper, making its first appearance, but I have an offcut that I will be sure to use elsewhere. I only had one sheet so I've cut and stretched this to look larger and covered the gap with the stripe on each side.

I kept the embellishment simple with clusters in two opposite corners; I found the chipboard clouds when I was looking for something else and they were reminiscent of the smoke and steam we saw so had to be included.

Lava Labyrinth

This page comes immediately before the last one I made from Iceland; it's also from Dimmuborgir Nature Reserve and is an overview of the 'lava labyrinth' there, an area of caves, stacks and crags formed about 2300 years ago and a landscape unique to Iceland.

I scraplifted myself for this one, a copy of my introductory page for St John's in Canada on another cruise, though I varied it slightly and the two pieces of woodgrain paper that I used give the page a slightly L-shaped design this time.

Mind the Gap

It's been ages since I made a page from our cruise to Iceland, Greenland and Norway last summer. First a poorly computer separated me from my organised photos, then the madness of National Scrapbooking Day (which just wasn't suited to working on this album), and finally a lack of scrapping time recently all mean that it's been three months since my last page.

I'd rather like to get this album finished before we cruise again later this year. Otherwise I know that the newer photos will demand my attention and I'll never get this one done. (Ask me how I know - I haven't finished a holiday album from 2009 yet and it's haunting me.)

So... it's back to Iceland and a tour we took from Akureyri. It was the only ship's tour we did, we normally prefer to do our own thing but this seemed to be the best way of seeing the geology of a country shaped by volcanic activity. One of the places we visited was Dimmuborgir National Park, and our guide stopped beside this crack in the ground to explain that it is the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which are moving apart at the rate of around 1" per year.

Shimelle's Page

I printed a couple of photos of the fault line, one in 4x6 and one in 3x4 as they are different in scale and I didn't think they would work as a pair if I printed them at the same size, and then went looking for a sketch or scraplift that suited them. I came up with Glitter Girl Adventure 056, where Shimelle had a deliberate space between her two photos that I found attractive. 

My page isn't a carbon copy; once I had the initial placement of photos and mats I did my own thing with the positioning of my title, journalling and embellishments.

Pseudocraters

I have another page from our tour of Iceland for you today. Pseudocraters form when hot lava flows over wet ground causing the water to turn into steam and explode up through the lava. These ones were formed around 2300 years ago, and they were the final thing we visited on the tour. I picked just two photos for this page, a general view and a close-up of one of the craters.

I started the page using a background that I had previously stuck the spotty vellum to and them abandoned. Several of Shimelle's sample pages from A Most Magical Scrapbook started out with a similar split background and I mostly scraplifted one of them for the rest of my page.

Goðafoss

I'm moving across to Akureyri in my cruise album now; we did a coach trip from there to see the interior of the island, and our first stop was at Goðafoss, the Waterfall of the Gods.


I needed this to be a double page and, with no recent sketches catching my eye, I turned to an old favourite from Sketch Support. I've used it several times before but I'm sure no-one will notice that as they look through my albums.

I also played along with the February Week 3 challenge at UKScrappers (yes, my blogging is well behind my crafting) where Sarah gave us a list of items to choose from and asked us to use at least three of three of the options. I chose photos (7), patterned papers (6) and brads (3).

I flipped the sketch, as that puts the photos into more-or-less chronological order across the page. The three on the left are of the river as we walked up to the falls. The large one on the right is a view from the top, and the three below were taken by the water at the bottom.

Austurvöllur

Austurvöllur is the main square in Reykjavik, and it borders both the Alþingishúsið (Parliament House) and the cathedral (which I've already scrapbooked here). The Alþingishúsið was the fifth of the photos that I considered when making my Historic Houses page but I thought that it was best scrapped as part of this page with an general view of the square and a close-up of the central statue (Jón Sigurðsson, a nineteenth century campaigner for Icelandic independence from Denmark).

My page design is another one from Shimelle's A Most Magical Scrapbook class. Hers had a 4x3 photo next to the 4x6s, and I originally printed my statue photo at that size but I felt that it dominated the page so I reprinted it at 3x2. 

This is the last page for Reykjavik and I've also finished Olden. I still have a page each to make from Tasiilaq and Ålesund and I've barely touched Akureyri and the trip we took from there so maybe I should focus on that next.

Historic Houses

This page is a "twin" to one I made a couple of weeks ago. That page (Town Park) was the first one that I made for my cruise album that was a flat grid rather than being made from layers of paper, so it was a design principle that I wanted to repeat elsewhere.

We saw various historic buildings in Reykjavik and I had five that I had wanted to include in the album, but didn't want to give each one a whole page, and I was undecided as to how to combine them. While making the Town Park page (which had one large and three small portrait photos) I decided to repeat it rotated for landscape photos this time. I've used pictures of four of the buildings on this page and kept one of the Parliament for another page.

Seriously?

I'm crossing back over to Iceland for this page of the Phallological Museum in Reykjavik. Yes, seriously, that does mean exactly what you think it means; it's one of the strangest museums we've ever visited, beating the Leprosy Museum in Bergen for subject matter, but not for the quality of the exhibits.

I picked two photos for this page - a 4x6 of the outside and a 4x3 showing some of the exhibits. My layout started out from the Scrappy Friends Sketch Challenge at Grand Diva's Creative Corner, but morphed as I went. I'd intended to follow it, reduced in size to still show a border of the kraft cardstock I'm working with for this album. However, it soon became clear that I'd be happier if I layered my photos across the camera paper strip rather than having them below it. 

With larger photos and less writing  than that indicated in the sketch, I moved my journalling below the photos and ran it down to the line of embellishments towards the foot of the page; I also decided to move the title up to the top as I felt it needed to be above the museum name in the photo.

Akureyrarkirkja

I'm staying in Iceland for this page, but crossing back to Akureyri. We only had a short time in the town one evening after a day time trip and I set out to visit the church, imaginatively named Akureyrarkirkja which means Akureyri's Church. 

The church stands on a hill, at the top of a flight of steps and was lit up at night which made it easy to find. I ended up with two photos in different orientations which I scrapped with the aid of another of Shimelle's prompts from her A Most Magical Scrapbook class.

Reflections in Tjörnin

I appear to be concentrating on the Icelandic portion of our cruise at the moment. It's not a conscious decision; I'm just picking off the easy pages, the ones where I only took a few photos so choosing which ones to print and scrap is fairly straightforward. 

Tjörnin is a small lake in Reykjavik. We sat here for a rest, my husband did some painting and we walked part way round it. We also took photos of the waterfront buildings and their reflections. I picked out three for this page, from different parts of the lake, and stacked them up in a page design lifted from Shimelle's class A Most Magical Scrapbook. Stacking three photos in a column is nothing new, but I do like the look of the extra paper at the bottom and the camera strip across the join for something just a bit different from my usual designs.

Farið

Back to my cruise album now, and another page from Shimelle's A Most Magical Scrapbook class. She put her photo, title and lots of embellishments on a paper 'shelf', but I ended up with a more paper layers and less embellishments. I also moved my title down the page as adding a journalling card opened up a good space for it alongside. I cut that title on my Silhouette as I wanted to be able to use the correct Icelandic letters.

Farið is a sculpture that I saw on the waterfront in Akureyri; I thought that it looked like a whale's tail but it means Flight and it actually commemorates 50 years of passenger flights in Iceland.

I also entered this page in last week's Weekly Challenge at UKScrappers; I've not done one of these for some time as sometimes the criteria are too specific for my tastes. However Scrapdolly set a good one last week - at least four patterned papers, one photo, cameras, butterflies and some form of stamping (although I didn't manage the butterflies). I stamped and fussy-cut the globe, a motif that's repeating through the album although it doesn't appear on every page.

Harpa

Another Icelandic page, and another from a sketch shared by Lottie Loves Paper on Facebook as part of  Five Sketches in Five Days earlier this month.

My photos are of Harpa, a newish concert hall on the waterfront in Reykjavik. Its architecture is intended to reflect the basalt landscape of Iceland, and I wanted to include some close-ups of the glass panels on my page. However, having all three photos in a tight block didn't work for me so I spread them out a little and filled in the gap with an arrow die-cut.

I moved the title on my page compared to the sketch (using some ancient chipboard letters that fitted the space perfectly), and concentrated the circles of embellishment more closely together.

Hungry?

I've gone back to the second of 'Five Sketches in Five Days' posted by Lottie Loves Paper on Facebook for this page. It's a great sketch for using up paper scraps, but I don't have too many of those this early in making my holiday album. 

The photo is of the 'Puffin and Whale' menu of one of the restaurants in Reykjavik. We didn't actually eat there, but the menu was interesting enough for me to want to photograph it and then scrapbook it - smoked puffin with raspberry vinegar, followed by whale peppersteak with fried vegetables.

Hallgrímskirkja

From Reykjavik Cathedral on the last page, I've crossed town to the much larger and newer Hallgrímskirkja for this page. It's a double, and another based on one of Shimelle's pages in her A Most Magical Scrapbook class. 

Shimelle used a long row of six 4x6 portrait photos spanning the width of her double page, but I decided on a more varied selection of sizes and orientations for my photos, and this opened up a gap for my title below the pictures on the right hand side of the page. I cut that title on the Silhouette as I have a scarcity of navy letter stickers.

The photo placement also created two open spaces for embellishment clusters in opposite corners; these are just a mix of paper pieces and die-cut shapes topped with wood veneer geo-tags.

Reykjavik Cathedral

I'm staying with Reykjavik today for this page featuring the Cathedral. The page design comes from the recent A Most Magical Scrapbook class run by Shimelle Laine. She was making a Disney album, but the prompts and page designs are pretty versatile rather than being specifically Disney-esque.

I had three photos of the cathedral, and considered stacking them in a column, but with one picture of the outside and two of the inside, I felt they would be better separated, and this design with three 4x6 photos and an extra 4x6 block worked better than the column.

Shimelle used her extra block for lots of embellishment, but it seemed like an obvious place for my title and journalling with just a little embellishment that I repeated diagonally opposite in a smaller size.

Sólfar

I'm sticking with our cruise for now, and sharing a page from Iceland. Sólfar, the Sun Voyager, is a sculpture on the waterfront in Reykjavik, commissioned to commemorate the bicentenary of the city. 

The page is based on the fourth of the Five Sketches in Five Days posted by Lottie Loves Paper on Facebook at the start of the month, though I've played with the paper layers and moved the line of embellishments down below my photos.

The arrow card behind my title is an old tag from Amy Tangerine which I trimmed down a little, and then tucked the tag end into the opposite corner so that lighter kraft colour appears in two places. The map print stars are old too, and have appeared in two previous cruise albums, so I'm keen to get them used up.

Akureyri

This is the third of my 'chapter divider' pages for our cruise, one for Akureyri in Iceland. They're all based on the same page design, and this time I flipped my original page (for Reykjavik) horizontally as the empty space in my photos at the bottom right was the best area for my journalling card to overlap.

I'm changing the papers for each page, picking them from the kit I put together before I started, but all of the page elements repeat and I'm cutting all the titles on my Silhouette in the same font.

Reykjavik

The problem with starting a new album without much of a plan, is that you don't have much of a plan. Having made my first couple of pages, I was left scrolling through photos and flicking through sketches, waiting for inspiration that didn't strike.

I'm currently taking part in Shimelle Laine's new class A Most Magical Scrapbook and one of her prompts is about making 'chapter dividers' to split an album into sections. This is something that I did for my Canadian Cruise album so it really should have occurred to me sooner. We had five ports of call on our cruise, so I'm going to start with 'title pages' for them; I've printed a 6x8 overview photo of each one and I shall be making five very similar pages.

My page design is loosely based on one from the class, where Shimelle used two 4x6 photos and a 4" strip of paper on a patterned background. My pages will all be on kraft cardstock rather than a pattern, so I've made the top strip wider and added an extra panel down the left. My journalling is in two parts - a few facts under the title and part of the story of the day on the journalling card. Of course that story will continue over a whole series of pages from the day.

I intend to repeat this basic page design four more times, so I cut the title letters on my Silhouette and embellished with stamped and die-cut pieces rather than unique items. This page took a bit of time and fussing to get it right, but now that it's done I have a clear template for the rest. I'll repeat the camera paper strip across the page each time, but I'll change the rest of the colours and patterns to suit each photo.
