David's Day

I've finally finished my album for last year's cruise to Greenland, Iceland and Norway. I didn't work chronologically so this page actually comes about two-thirds of the way through. 

The photos are from the Botanical Gardens in Akureyri and were taken by our adult son who chose to spend his day in the town while we went on a tour. He was very proud of the fact that he'd taken lots of photos for me ready to document his visit as he doesn't normally take many pictures even on holiday.

I initially chose four photos and printed them at 4x3 but you couldn't see the details in all the green so I dropped one and went larger with the others. I have another page in this album with a column of three 4x6 photos, so I tried to make the rest of the page design as different from the other one as possible. I considered several vertical strips of paper to the left of the photos but, looking at all my scraps, I decided to use as many of them as I could in horizontal strips instead.

I've had that acrylic arrow (and some other pieces) in my project box ever since I started this album and it took a challenge from For the Love of Pretty Paper to finally move one from box to page. We have an Alphabet Relay running in the group where we take it in turns to set challenges based on the letters of the alphabet, and this was A for Acrylic.

One Night Only

Penultimate cruise page now, and it's from the Crew Show, which is a chance for the ordinary crew members to show off their talents. It normally includes some traditional dances from their home countries, a few singers and two set pieces - on every cruise we've done the deck crew perform "In the Navy" while the engine room team do "You can Keep your Hat on" (the finale to The Full Monty (but they keep more than their hats on)).

I started this page from the second of Sue's July sketches, but adapted it for two columns of  photos. The navy blue panel (two pieces actually) isn't in the sketch, but I needed it to cover the gap in the aqua map print as I have no large papers left at this stage so I'm cutting and stretching where I can. 

I originally made two embellishment clusters in the places indicated by the flowers on the sketch but that was before I added my title. Having placed that on a scalloped die-cut circle I added two smaller matching circles to my original clusters and then the title really called out for a cluster of its own so I ended up with three.

All You Need is Love

Still on cruise pages, there are two more to come and then I'll be done ... just in time for the next cruise! To be honest, this one's a 'filler', I'm on an odd number of pages and so I need one more (or a gap and that would be silly).

My photos came from a Beatles-themed show one evening, and I scraplifted myself for the page design. However it's a scraplift with a twist as I am taking Shimelle's latest class, Layer on Layer on Layer, and one of the prompts is to scraplift yourself but find a way to incorporate more layers in the page. 

I started out from a three year old page for Caernarfon Castle, and flipped it horizontally to suit the direction in my photos. At this stage in the album I didn't have many big pieces of paper left, but I did have plenty of 12" strips and some medium size pieces that I could cut and stretch. The new page has more layers behind the photos than the original and I substituted a series of overlapping paper strips for the single vertical piece in the original. I even got an extra layer into the background with two scraps of vellum positioned to look like one longer strip.

I used two colours of tile stickers for my title and there are three reasons why I used the red ones for the word love - they form a triangle of red with the two ends of the red paper strip; they are wider than the cream ones so can 'support' the longer words above; and I only had two cream l's left.

Gala Buffet

Almost there with the cruise scrapbook, and these pages come from the Gala Buffet on our penultimate evening. The food is beautifully presented, almost too good to eat, and the buffet opens for photographs first before anyone is allowed to eat anything. 

When I first saw this month's double page sketch from Stick It Down, I thought it would be perfect for this set of photos, but I soon discovered that a good proportion of my pictures were portrait rather than landscape in orientation. This wasn't actually too much of a problem and I managed to re-work the block of photos to suit them, and arranged the remainder in a loose 'C' shape on the other page. Not an exact copy of the sketch, but I think you can see it there (even if I did decide to swap the two sides over).

That strip of vellum doesn't appear in the sketch at all but I added it for three reasons - firstly having something that spans both sides of the page helps to tie them together and makes it clear that this is a double rather than two singles. Secondly, I'm working with plain cardstock backgrounds in this album and the left side was too stark without something to cover at least part of that vast expanse of kraft. Thirdly, without it, the photos were 'floating' on the left side of the page; having them all touching the vellum 'anchors' them in place.

Kniven & Aksla

Time to fill in a few gaps in the album now, so I'm going back to Ålesund for a missing double that I skipped over previously. We walked along the ridge above the town that day, and I have a collection of photos taken from the official viewpoint. It seems that many visitors don't venture much further than this, but they really should.

My page design was lead by the sizes of the scraps that I had left - I cut the stripe in half horizontally to span the two pages, and layered the green print over it at the size it was. I needed to fill in the two sides of the page and picked scraps of the plaid print (cut and stretched on the left) and a 6x6 paper with tags. I repeated the tag in a larger size from the ephemera pack and tucked my journalling under it.

We Are Family

I'm approaching the end of my cruise album now. I've written a list of the pages that I still need to make, and I was surprised at just how short it is.

One photo that definitely needs to be included is the only one from the whole holiday that has the four of us in it and was taken by the ship's photographer on formal night. The original is 8x10, but I scanned and reprinted it at 4x6 to fit better with the rest of the photos in my album. 

I've been re-watching the videos from Shimelle Laine's older classes recently, and this page is based on an L-shaped design from Ready, Set, Scrapbook. The suitcase print is one that will probably only appear on this page, but I'm happy with that. It's from the main collection that I'm using and matches the colours on my other pages so I don't think the different print will really be noticeable as people flick through.

Restless Earth

This page actually comes earlier in the day than the last two, but I needed to get 'warmed up' on a couple of single pages before tackling a double. These photos come from the 'geothermal field' at Námaskarð, an area with mud pots, steam vents and boiling springs where the soil is too hot and poisonous for anything to grow. We had to be careful where we walked as the surface temperature reaches 80-100°C in places.

The photos needed a mat and looked best on black cardstock, so I cut two 9" wide boxes to sit in the middle of my page. I didn't like the look of the plain cardstock around the edges of the photos, so I filled in those areas with a mosaic of green papers which I've used elsewhere in the album. The blue is a new paper, making its first appearance, but I have an offcut that I will be sure to use elsewhere. I only had one sheet so I've cut and stretched this to look larger and covered the gap with the stripe on each side.

I kept the embellishment simple with clusters in two opposite corners; I found the chipboard clouds when I was looking for something else and they were reminiscent of the smoke and steam we saw so had to be included.

Lava Labyrinth

This page comes immediately before the last one I made from Iceland; it's also from Dimmuborgir Nature Reserve and is an overview of the 'lava labyrinth' there, an area of caves, stacks and crags formed about 2300 years ago and a landscape unique to Iceland.

I scraplifted myself for this one, a copy of my introductory page for St John's in Canada on another cruise, though I varied it slightly and the two pieces of woodgrain paper that I used give the page a slightly L-shaped design this time.

Mind the Gap

It's been ages since I made a page from our cruise to Iceland, Greenland and Norway last summer. First a poorly computer separated me from my organised photos, then the madness of National Scrapbooking Day (which just wasn't suited to working on this album), and finally a lack of scrapping time recently all mean that it's been three months since my last page.

I'd rather like to get this album finished before we cruise again later this year. Otherwise I know that the newer photos will demand my attention and I'll never get this one done. (Ask me how I know - I haven't finished a holiday album from 2009 yet and it's haunting me.)

So... it's back to Iceland and a tour we took from Akureyri. It was the only ship's tour we did, we normally prefer to do our own thing but this seemed to be the best way of seeing the geology of a country shaped by volcanic activity. One of the places we visited was Dimmuborgir National Park, and our guide stopped beside this crack in the ground to explain that it is the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which are moving apart at the rate of around 1" per year.

Shimelle's Page

I printed a couple of photos of the fault line, one in 4x6 and one in 3x4 as they are different in scale and I didn't think they would work as a pair if I printed them at the same size, and then went looking for a sketch or scraplift that suited them. I came up with Glitter Girl Adventure 056, where Shimelle had a deliberate space between her two photos that I found attractive. 

My page isn't a carbon copy; once I had the initial placement of photos and mats I did my own thing with the positioning of my title, journalling and embellishments.

Pseudocraters

I have another page from our tour of Iceland for you today. Pseudocraters form when hot lava flows over wet ground causing the water to turn into steam and explode up through the lava. These ones were formed around 2300 years ago, and they were the final thing we visited on the tour. I picked just two photos for this page, a general view and a close-up of one of the craters.

I started the page using a background that I had previously stuck the spotty vellum to and them abandoned. Several of Shimelle's sample pages from A Most Magical Scrapbook started out with a similar split background and I mostly scraplifted one of them for the rest of my page.

Goðafoss

I'm moving across to Akureyri in my cruise album now; we did a coach trip from there to see the interior of the island, and our first stop was at Goðafoss, the Waterfall of the Gods.


I needed this to be a double page and, with no recent sketches catching my eye, I turned to an old favourite from Sketch Support. I've used it several times before but I'm sure no-one will notice that as they look through my albums.

I also played along with the February Week 3 challenge at UKScrappers (yes, my blogging is well behind my crafting) where Sarah gave us a list of items to choose from and asked us to use at least three of three of the options. I chose photos (7), patterned papers (6) and brads (3).

I flipped the sketch, as that puts the photos into more-or-less chronological order across the page. The three on the left are of the river as we walked up to the falls. The large one on the right is a view from the top, and the three below were taken by the water at the bottom.

On High

It seems like ages since I've shared a page from my latest cruise album (Iceland, Greenland and Norway in 2017). I was reviewing the pages that I've made so far when I realised that there's one missing from Tasiilaq. We climbed up to the highest point in the town where the locals built a cairn to commemorate the town's 50th anniversary. We should have had stunning views from there but the weather was against us.

My page design is a mish-mash of elements from other pages in this album; I've repeated the triangles in the corners, the row of three photos and the journalling card next to the title from other pages, which should hopefully lead to a cohesive album rather than a collection of pages.

The Musical Merrymaker

Another cruise page, with photos of one of our guest entertainers. Andy Eastwood aka the Musical Merrymaker is a showman and ukulele-player who did two evening shows on board playing classics from the era of George Formby and also his own arrangements of other pieces.

I used the first of the February sketches from Stuck?! Sketches for this page, but switched the doily to a square of vellum as I haven't been using doilies or circles in this album. I wanted a much longer title and subtitle for my page than that in the sketch so I moved them to the bottom of the page where I added an extra strip of paper and some washi tape.

Black Watch

This is the last of the 'introductory' pages for my cruise album - I always try to make a page with photos of our ship in each port. My itinerary is often on the title page of the album but this time I've combined it with the ship photos.

We were supposed to visit six ports, but one was cancelled due to bad weather so I had five photos from the ports of call and one from Rosyth where we started out. This month's sketch in the For the Love of Pretty Paper Facebook group had six photos so made the perfect starting point to my page, though I needed to rotate it and my photos were larger.

I matted each photo on two papers, mostly from a 6x6 pad which tied in with another of the stash-busting challenges from Lottie Loves Paper, to use six or more 6x6 papers on a page. 

Once the photos were double-matted, they were even larger so I dropped the extra pieces behind them. I also had to move the title as it wouldn't work in the middle.

I added the itinerary to the left of the page, with a few pieces of ephemera, but they needed to be anchored by something so I added the paper strips on the left. All-in-all my page moved a fair distance from the original sketch, but I'm happy with it.

Road Trip

Having made the title page for my cruise album (Cruise 2017), I'm moving on to one of my 'introductory' pages that come between the title and the first port of call. We live in Essex and our ship left from Rosyth (near Edinburgh) so we turned the journey into a road trip, staying overnight in Durham and Edinburgh en route.

I'll cover some of the stops in more detail in my main annual album, but I did want to include the trip in the cruise album (and bust some of the road trip themed pieces that are in the Boarding Pass collection). I based my page around two main elements - a map of the UK with our stops marked by enamel dots and a column of photos from the places we stopped - Durham Market Hall, Hadrian's Wall, the English-Scottish Border, Jedburgh Abbey, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Forth Rail Bridge.

Cruise 2017

Two challenges collided to make me do this page next when I'd intended to move on to Akureyri in my cruise album. We're on our third run through the alphabet in the ABC Challenges at UKScrappers and I picked up A for Adventure; also one of the stash-busting challenges from Lotties Loves Paper this month is to use as much ephemera as possible on a page. 

I have the ephemera pack and the sticker sheet from Photo Play Paper's Boarding Pass collection; some of the pieces are more travel-themed than others and I'd mentally reserved them for my title page. One of them has the wording 'It's time for a new adventure' which fits in with the UKScrappers challenge and I used an 'adventure' word sticker too.

We visited three countries on this trip (Iceland, Greenland and Norway) so I picked three scenery photos and printed them at 4x4 to fit across the page with paper strips above and below. I used a vertical strip of navy paper to ground all the die-cut pieces and arranged them in a column, trying to fit them together like a jigsaw puzzle.

I popped a couple of the stickers up on foam squares and scattered a few enamel dots and wood veneer stars into the mix. I cut the title on my Silhouette and added the three country names with letter stickers.

Austurvöllur

Austurvöllur is the main square in Reykjavik, and it borders both the Alþingishúsið (Parliament House) and the cathedral (which I've already scrapbooked here). The Alþingishúsið was the fifth of the photos that I considered when making my Historic Houses page but I thought that it was best scrapped as part of this page with an general view of the square and a close-up of the central statue (Jón Sigurðsson, a nineteenth century campaigner for Icelandic independence from Denmark).

My page design is another one from Shimelle's A Most Magical Scrapbook class. Hers had a 4x3 photo next to the 4x6s, and I originally printed my statue photo at that size but I felt that it dominated the page so I reprinted it at 3x2. 

This is the last page for Reykjavik and I've also finished Olden. I still have a page each to make from Tasiilaq and Ålesund and I've barely touched Akureyri and the trip we took from there so maybe I should focus on that next.

Historic Houses

This page is a "twin" to one I made a couple of weeks ago. That page (Town Park) was the first one that I made for my cruise album that was a flat grid rather than being made from layers of paper, so it was a design principle that I wanted to repeat elsewhere.

We saw various historic buildings in Reykjavik and I had five that I had wanted to include in the album, but didn't want to give each one a whole page, and I was undecided as to how to combine them. While making the Town Park page (which had one large and three small portrait photos) I decided to repeat it rotated for landscape photos this time. I've used pictures of four of the buildings on this page and kept one of the Parliament for another page.

Town Park

Another page from Ålesund, this one's from the Town Park (which has no better name), I had four photos that I wanted to include - the steps down the hillside from viewpoint to park, a statue, a memorial and a sculpture. My first instinct was to print them all at 3x4, but then I would have lost some of the detail in the steps photo so I printed that one at 4x6 instead. I didn't have a layout plan in mind, and just moved the pictures around the page until I hit on a pleasing arrangement. 

With my photos in three columns, I decided to fill in the gaps to turn this into a grid. I haven't done a page like this in a while, and none in this album, so I will have to repeat the idea before I finish. However there are some photos from Reykjavik that I've been wondering how to tackle, and I think another grid may be the answer.

At UKScrappers, we have an ABC Challenge running all year, with each person in turn accepting a challenge and setting one for the next person as we go through the alphabet. We're on our second run already and I recently accepted 'A is for Arrows' and set 'B is for Buttons' for the next person. I have arrows as a repeating motif throughout this album so it was an easy one to do; my page has two die-cut arrows and arrows washi tape.

Rundskue

I do like to repeat designs and motifs when I'm making an album for a holiday or other event, and one of the things that I need to repeat in my cruise album is a page based on a triangle/diagonal design. I did one a while back (Harpa) and added a second (Briksdalbreen) when a good sketch came up earlier this month, but I'd like at least one more, preferably more, and to have them spread throughout the album rather than being clumped together.

The two 'triangle' pages that I've done so far were from Reykjavik and Olden, and I'm currently working my way through photos from Ålesund so this seemed to be a good time for another. I chose a stripe for my triangle and overlapped two 4x6 photos to fit on an 8x8 cardstock mat which I offset on another patterned paper. I ran my title vertically again (one thing that I definitely keep repeating), filled the space below it with a large embellishment cluster and built something similar in the opposite corner.

Rundskue means something like 'round sight' and is the name of either the highest point on the hilly ridge above Ålesund or of the viewing tower in the top photo, possibly both. We climbed the tower for views out over the surrounding islands, and the bottom photo is a selfie that we took up there.
