Just Potter*ing

I have another 2019 page for you today, one that was loosely inspired by the June sketch at Stick It Down.

I slanted the diagonal stripes on my page much more gently, with them covering the full 24" width of my double page, and used many more photos, eleven of them, but placed them in columns to match the portrait photos of the sketch.

Those photos were from a day out in London, where my daughter and I explored a few places linked to Harry Potter. The highlight was the House of MinaLima, the studio which belongs to the graphic artists who designed all the paper props for the films, and have some of them on display here.

My diagonal stripes were just black, cream and gold, so I brought in some colour via my photo mats and some stamping in the open spaces.

Harry Potter Studio Tour

I published my February Scraplift Challenge a couple of days ago, and I'm taking on the challenge too. My original page had 12 small photos, but my new version has 8 larger pictures.

I made a whole album for our visit to the Harry Potter Studio Tour, but I also make albums for each year and this page will go in the 2014 album as a summary of the day.

The strips on the left are all scraps from making the album. My photos are larger than on the original page, so I made the column of scraps narrower and dropped one of the vertical strips entirely.

Now it's over to you. I can't wait to see your pages. Please link up in the sidebar by the end of the month.

The Making of Harry Potter

This is the final page of my Harry Potter Studio Tour album, but also the first, my title page. I had three things that I wanted to be in this page -  the picture of the Great Hall doors from my email booking confirmation, our tickets and a piece of film chipboard - but I wasn't sure how to combine them so I kept putting off making the page. At one point I had the idea of a patchwork of scraps behind the main photo, so doing it last was my best course of action.

However, once I saw the Twistback Thursday challenge at Sketch-n-Scrap, I knew if would work perfectly with my picture and tickets. This new challenge combines an archive sketch with a twist. This month the twist is to use something old and something new on the page.

All the papers and cardstock on this page are new, bought for this album, and the chipboard and brads are old.

So now that I've finished all my Harry Potter pages, I will look back through them as a whole. I'll add things where they're needed and change things that I don't like. There is one page that I may re-do. I also hope to do an album share video or slideshow soon.

Creature Workshop

One of the areas of the Harry Potter Studio Tour was the Creature Workshop, full of body parts and animatronics. I took quite a few photos, but only four made it to the page. These were three portrait and one landscape in orientation, so I started by laying them out on the page and moving them around until I was happy with their positions. Once I'd done this, I quite liked the way the photos looked on the cream cardstock, so I decided on a grid page, just filling in the remaining three areas with remnants of the plaid paper, embellishing on top, and running polka dot paper strips across the top and bottom of the page.

Mullpeppers Apothecary

Almost there. Thanks for sticking with me over the last few months.

It's my final page from Diagon Alley today, with photos from Mr Mullpepper's Apothecary. Once again, it's a large photo of the shop front and a smaller close-up of the window display. This time, I started out from the papers that I have left, and decided to base my page on this wide band of polka dot paper. I played around with various scraps and off-cuts before deciding to run lines of punched squares above and below it.

Quality Quidditch Supplies

With just a few pages to go in this album, I have to tackle the last two pages from Diagon Alley. I was struggling with these before Christmas but I can't leave them much longer. The first one is Quality Quidditch Supplies and I have two photos, a larger one with the whole shop and a smaller close-up of the bats and bludgers in the window.

You may remember that I was using tile stickers on die-cut tags for all my shop names, so I laid out my photos and tag on the page, and moved them around a bit. I hit on this configuration, which suggested a circle to me. Then I just added a couple more papers (cut and stretched to look wider) behind  the circle and embellished each side of my main photo.

Ford Anglia

My kit of papers for my Harry Potter Studio Tour album is looking rather depleted now, and this page was driven by the pieces I have left, rather than a sketch or scraplift. I took three of the larger pieces to form the main background area, added a strip across the middle, and tucked in a few extra strips along the edges.

The photos are of Mr Weasley's flying Ford Anglia; there were two on the tour - one 'flying' above the entrance hall, and one in the back lot which you could sit in for photos. I wonder how many more were used in the making of the films?

Wands

The end of my Harry Potter album is in sight now, and I'm using what sketch challenges I can to get it done. This one came from Grand Diva's Creative Corner and is part of a trio of Scrappy Friends challenges. I flipped it horizontally and straightened up the back papers.

My photos are of the wands at the Harry Potter Studio Tour, but they were behind glass and very difficult to photograph without reflections. The best two were a sideways short of all the wands and a close-up of Harry's and Hermione's.

Dolores Umbridge

I have another page from the Harry Potter Studio Tour today. This time it's Dolores Umbridge's vile pink office and some of her costumes. My photo of the office has an orange cast, so I stayed clear of the orange papers in my kits, choosing black and teal blue instead.

I wanted to use the cat brad because of the cat plates in the office, but it was olive green and I didn't have that colour elsewhere. I added a couple of circles of olive card with plain brads in the other two clusters, and then I added more down each side. I am wondering is the strips at the sides are too much, and I might remove them or make them narrower before I finish this album.

Please put me in Ravenclaw

A new year and new challenges. This is my first page of the year, and I used a sketch from Stuck?! Sketches, though I adapted it to suit my own needs. In particular, my title was so long that I dropped the paper panel on the right of the page.

The photo is my daughter wearing a sorting hat at the Harry Potter Studio Tour. She's a big fan and feels that she belongs in Ravenclaw.

I'm also linking up with Rochelle's Tic Tac Toe challenge, part of a trio of Scrappy Friends challenges, as I used the right hand colomn of her grid - die cuts, 3+ patterned papers and gold.

Magic is Might

I'm scraplifting again today, copying another of my older layouts (Bodmin & Wenford Railway). I'm in the final stretch of Harry Potter pages and these photos are of the 'Magic is Might' statue, the one that stood in the atrium of the Ministry of Magic after Lord Voldemort came to power.

I finally used a yellow die-cut piece (cut in two) that came in the Tidbits pack, and I've started on a new set of Thickers as I was running out of key letters. These will appear on a few more pages and hopefully they'll be scattered about in the album because I haven't made my pages in order.

Hagrid's Hut

Yesterday I posted a Scraplift Challenge, a new venture for 2015, and I'd love for you to join in. I'm asking you to scraplift my most popular layout from last year, and I'm offering a prize to one lucky participant. Please check out my last post for the challenge and also read the full rules, linked on the right.

I've taken on the challenge too, turning the old three-photo page into a new two-photo page of Hagrid's Hut on the Harry Potter Studio Tour.

I've flipped the original page horizontally, and the previous fussy-cut edge is now just a punched edge. I've dropped the scattered sequins and added a second embellishment cluster. However, there are plenty of similarities between the two pages and that's what I'm looking for with this challenge.

Now, it's over to you. Please link up your version of this page in the comments on yesterday's post.

Stick It Down - Teachers

Happy New Year, and welcome to the first set of sketch challenges from Stick It Down for 2015. In a change from last year's format, they are moving from weekly challenges to monthly ones and will be publishing three sketches on the first of each month (for single pages, double pages and cards).

I'm first on the blog for January, sharing my single page alongside the sketch reveal. I'm still working my way through hundreds of photos from our Harry Potter Studio Tour, and this page has the costumes for four of the Hogwarts staff. I altered the dimensions of the sketch, using photos in all four quadrants and added layers and a die-cut title on the left side. I balanced this with a sliver of paper on the right to anchor my journalling (just the teachers' names and subjects).

Please hop across and join in with us. If you're not a single page scrapper, then there are sketches for double pages and cards too.

Stick It Down - Dobby

It's the fifth Tuesday of the month which is traditionally a 'You Pick the Sketch' challenge over at Stick It Down. Although we don't officially start our DT duties for another few days, Darcy invited the new team members to join in.

I've picked a single photo sketch from November and turned it into a two photo page about Dobby the house elf from Harry Potter. The left photo is the concept artwork and the right photo is one of the models they worked with; Dobby in the films was completely computer-generated.

I'll be back in a couple of days with the January sketch, as we switch from weekly to monthly for the new year.

Welcome to Hogwarts

The latest team scraplifting game at Scrap Whispers came to an end recently, and all three teams' pages have now been revealed. I was 4th to play on Georgina's team and when I received the page to scraplift, it was rather similar to one that I had in my head for my Harry Potter Studio Tour album.

This page is one of my sub-section header pages and will be followed by all the sets that were on display from Hogwarts. You've seen most of those pages already - the Great Hall, the Gryffindor Common Room, Dumbledore's Office, the Boys' Dormitory and the Potions Classroom. The photo is from the beginning of the tour; we watched an introductory film, and then the screen lifted and we entered the Great Hall through these doors.

Angie's page that I was scraplifting has a single photo with several layers of patterned paper behind it, and I was more than happy to do the same thing, though I made the angles smaller in my version. Her word stickers became my file tab, and her rosettes turned into stamped circles, which I balanced with more circles on the opposite corner. I moved my title down and finished with a smattering of stars.

You can see the three chains of scraplifted pages on the Scrap Whispers blog: Georgina's team; Rosey's team; Nilsa's team.

The Order of the Phoenix

I have a pile of two-photo pages to do for my Harry Potter Studio Tour album, so I was pleased to see a two-photo sketch at Let's Get Sketchy last week.

I picked two of my smaller photos, the costumes for some of the Order of the Phoenix members and set to work. I did jiggle some of the elements about, adding an extra vertical paper, dropping the banner and moving my title to run around the photo block.

Quidditch

It's been a while since I did a challenge page, as I'm concentrating on finishing my Harry Potter album. I liked this one at Stuck?! Sketches at the beginning of the month, but I didn't think I had Harry Potter pictures to fit to it. Roll on a few weeks, and I realised that I could adapt it to these photos of the Quidditch costumes and balls on the Studio Tour. They are different sizes and orientations, but they fill a broadly similar space on the page. I just extended my paper panels to fill the full width of the page.

Props

This page will be one of the sub-section header pages in my Harry Potter Studio Tour album, and has photos of three of the larger props from the films - the door to the Chamber of Secrets, the pendulum from the Clock Tower and the armillary sphere from the Astronomy Tower.

I was looking for a specific page that I wanted to scraplift here, when I came across another one, and decided to pick it instead. My photo dimensions are slightly different here from the original page (Chelmorton), but both sets stack up to 12" high with 24 1" punched squares in two columns. This is a great design for using up loads of scraps. I used eyelets among the squares on my original page, but this time it's brads.

Slug & Jiggers

It took me quite a while of juggling papers and photos for this page before I settled on a layout. It's of Slug & Jiggers, one of the apothecaries in Diagon Alley on the Harry Potter Studio Tour. I've committed to putting the shop names on these tags, and I had two different-sized landscape photos; I just couldn't fit the three things together nicely until I hit on this diagonal layout.

I have several more pages to do, with similar photos (one larger and one smaller, both landscape) and I can feel that they are going to be troublesome. I'm hoping that some interesting sketches pop up in the  blogs that I follow.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

This is the last double page that I need to do for my Harry Potter Studio Tour album, and I'm glad to have it done as I normally put off doing doubles for as long as possible.

This was the finale of the tour - the 1:24 scale model of Hogwarts Castle that was used for filming exterior shots of the school. It's an intricate work of art, with all the buildings, towers, courtyards and greenhouses laid out before us.

I used the September double page sketch from Stick It Down for my page. While I stuck fairly close to the right hand side of the sketch, I did play with the left hand side, where I wanted a larger photo of the castle.

Terrible photo - I'll take another one when we have decent daylight.

There's no embellishment yet, and I'm not sure whether the page really needs any. I may just scatter a few wood veneer stars around. I will be revisting all my pages before I finish off the album, and adding extras to those pages that need them.
