Summer Scraplifts with Scrap Squad - Part 2

The Scrap Squad group on Facebook generally post a scraplifting challenge once a week, but sometimes they do longer seasonal events and earlier this month they ran '12 Days of Summer Scraplifts'. I shared four pages in my last post, and now I'm back with another

66. Twilight Crop (2024)

The page for Day 6 was based around circles, and I used it to record the Twilight Crafts weekend crop back in May. I cut circles from photos of the room, but had to keep my main picture as a rectangle as a circle wasn't going to work.

67. Family & Fireworks (2017)

Day 7 was a multi-photo grid, so I went back a few years to this set of photos from Bonfire Night which I had previously printed but never scrapped. My title was inspired by the original page which was called Sun & Sea, with a large ampersand.

68. Soapbox Racers (2024)

This was just the loosest inspiration from Day 9, which had two rows of triangles which looked to me like bunting. I pulled out a bunting-printed paper to fussy-cut but then decided to leave it whole as my background. I had two photos from when my niece took part in Red Bull's Soapbox Race and they are much bigger than the one on the original page, so my page ended up looking quite unlike it. I still need to journal but I wanted to speak to my niece first.

69. Cruise Scandinavia (Scandinavia 2023)

The twelfth and final scraplift of this event was based on a large photo taking up most of an A4/8.5x11" page. I had no photos that big, but I did have a map of our cruise route that I printed on A4 paper for the title page of my Scandinavian cruise album.

I Spy Cake

I'm combining a multitude of elements in this page, driven by NSD challenges at the two sites I decided to follow this year. 

Firstly the 'Fauvism' challenge at For the Love of Pretty Paper asked us to use any two options from complementary colours, a single-coloured paper and a sketch by Lisa Sikorski, and I managed all three. 

Secondly, Hey Little Magpie set a tic-tac-toe challenge, and I chose the left column - one photo, a border punch and stitching.

My single photo is one my husband took of our son eyeing up the cakes after a family funeral. My colour scheme was largely driven by the strip of tea cup paper, which is a branding strip that I thought was too nice to throw away. I considered rotating the sketch to suit a portrait photo better, but that tea cup strip dictated that I kept to the original version.

Aqua sits opposite peach in the colour wheel and I had a 6x6 floral paper that combined the two colours; the rest are all single colour papers.

Getaway

I've ticked off two more NSD challenges today; I'm glad that both groups I'm following have a two-week deadline as it's a less pressured approach.

The first is a simple one from Hey Little Magpie to be inspired by a grid, and the second is the 'Land Art' challenge from For the Love of Pretty Paper. All their challenges are based on different art forms and for this one I chose two map papers and a travel theme from the options available.

My photos are from a cruise to Iceland, Greenland and Norway back in 2017 (one per port of call) which I placed in a grid with a map paper to hold embellishments in the sixth square. This is just a summary page for my annual album; the holiday has one of its own as well. I based that album around Photoplay Paper's Boarding Pass collection, which made it the obvious choice for this page.

Early Days

I've finally finished sharing pages and cards inspired by National Scrapbooking Day at the start of the month, and now it's time to start all over again! For the Love of Pretty Paper postponed their NSD celebrations to this weekend and we kicked off gently on Friday evening with 'Colour Love', a challenge to create a page using our favourite colour. 

I chose blue for my colour, with a sketch from Heather Leopard (which was one of the May sketches over at Stash Busting) and two photos of my daughter and her boyfriend.

I moved the photos slightly and used an old 6x6 pad for my paper layers. I ended up with more layers than in the sketch and ate into the space indicated for the title so I moved that to the left side and journalled below it.

Cartmel Overnight

I'd printed an assortment of photos before National Scrapbooking Day, different numbers and sizes including a couple of sets for double pages. One of them was a group of five 4x3 photos from Cartmel in Cumbria where we stayed for a night last December having won a night's B&B in a raffle.

I decided to scrap those photos for a simple challenge from For the Love of Pretty Paper, to use a vertical striped paper. I had a large scrap of striped paper that suited the colours of the old buildings in Cartmel rather well so I started arranging and rearranging the photos on the page for a layout that I liked. One thing that soon struck me was that the photo of Cartmel Priory was just too small. The other buildings filled their frames but I'd taken the Priory photo from a distance to include the graveyard and it looked too small and insignificant. I printed it again at 4x6 and I'm much happier now, the building is a similar size to the others and it seems more balanced. Back to rearranging the photos and I decided on a circle of photos backed by a circle of the striped paper.

ELO

I made this page for a Recipe Challenge from For the Love of Pretty Paper, we were asked to make a page with two photos, three patterned papers, five die-cuts, alphas, thread, sequins, mist and our own secret ingredient.

The only pair of printed photos that I had came from an ELO concert last year. I'd previously picked this pearlescent paper as a possible background but I hadn't found suitable papers to match. With the recipe in mind I didn't need many papers and went with gold and a music-printed tissue paper. I used thread to sew a star on the page and die-cut five small stars from glittery paper. My secret ingredients were washi tape and stamping.

Sweet Dreams

It's always useful when different sites set similar challenges for National Scrapbooking Day and that's what happened for this page. For the Love of Pretty Paper asked for a page with black and white plus one other colour, while Hey Little Magpie wanted a monochrome page. The word monochrome seems to be open to interpretation in the scrapbooking world, but I went with the idea that black and white are both allowed alongside one other colour.

I had several photos of my daughter catching up on her sleep the day after a 24 hour scout activity; she's wearing a purple t-shirt and I briefly toyed with making a purple page, but I really don't have many purple papers. What I do have in abundance is aqua, in particular I had one paper with both aqua and black so picked the rest to coordinate with it.

Skiing

Back to the stash-busting challenges from Lottie Loves Paper now; they closed at the end of February and I've posted all my pages in their Facebook group, but I still have a couple to share here. One of the challenges was to use three or more washi tapes on a page, and I spotted the perfect sketch for this, shared in another Facebook group, and traced it back to the Sketch Savvy blog. 

I had a random 4x6 photo on my desk, one that my cousin had sent me from their skiing holiday, and I decided to use it and give it a home in my album before it got lost or damaged. I picked a snowflake patterned paper for my background and looked through my washi tape collection to pick out a few. I clearly favour aqua over any other colour and so pulled out ten different patterns to use.

I mixed labels in with the washi strips in the column on the left and layered my photo on a few 6x6 papers. With so many patterns already on the page, I kept the embellishment simple - snowflake brads, blue pearls and word stickers.

Tarn Hows & Black Crag

This was another page driven by a challenge. Lottie Loves Paper asked us to mix Something Old with Something New for one of their stash-busting challenges. I started out from the new; my most recent scrapbook order actually came from Lottie Loves Paper and contained the 6x6 pad and stickers from OneCanoeTwo's Creekside collection. These outdoors-y papers took me back to December when my husband and I spent a weekend in the Lake District. I printed three photos from a walk we took then and looked for a sketch that would work with my photos and papers, turning up one from Shimelle's 'Sketch to Scrapbook Page' series.

I had also bought a few 12x12 sheets from Creekside, but in order to mix old and new I picked out an older alternative from Studio Calico; it's labelled 2015 but I can't have had it that long as I first ordered from them in 2016. I mixed old and new in the embellishment too - the flowers are ancient, the woodgrain paper and heart puffy stickers are middling and the enamel dots and word stickers are new.

I also worked this page to a recent weekly challenge at UKScrappers; Elaine asked us to use a non-white background, two or more photos and a doodled element, so it's her fault that I doodled around the edge of the page.

Lovely

I'm flitting between my cruise pages and challenges that take my fancy but can't be done as part of the cruise album, and this page falls into the latter category. This month's sketch at UKScrappers with two circles of stitching and some trees in the embellishment caught my eye and made me think of scrapbooking a Christmas tree photo. (I can't copy the sketch here, but it's on the link if you are interested).

Lottie Loves Paper have a series of stash-busting challenges this month, and the fifth one was "Small is Beautiful" - use up your tiny embellishments. I was originally going to spread some Christmas brads and other small pieces out around the stitched circles, but I changed tack and decided to fill in the gap between the two circles with the smallest pieces I could find instead. My provisional title for the page was "Red, Green and Gold" and I stuck to that colour scheme, starting with gold enamel hearts and chipboard stars, then brads in all three colours and finally filling in the gaps with gems. I store most of my embellishments by colour and when I found a glittery die-cut of the word "lovely" in my red drawer that became my title instead. I layered it over an acetate circle from the gold drawer and I love that the circle looks like a Christmas bauble.

Almost Grown Up

I'm back with another page from last weekend's cyber crop organised by the ladies at Stick It Down. Laura's challenge was a 'Grab 5' where she asked us to use a stencil, stamping, alpha stickers, sequins and this sketch.

My choice of photo to use was completely driven by the sketch. My daughter attended the local scouts' dinner and dance for the first time last year. It's a formal event for over 16s only and the only photo I have of her and her friends was small and square, perfect for this sketch.

Next decision was the background paper; I wanted it to be fairly plain for the mixed media effects in the sketch, but I didn't want to use completely plain cardstock as a lot of it would be on show. The paper I chose had some paint lines and spatters already printed on it, and I used two stencils and a stamp to add to them. 

The hardest part of the sketch was that large arrow, and I played around with various options before ditching it in favour of paper strips spanning the width of the page, sitting my title above them.

The long line of spatter is mostly printed on the page, though I added stars, sequins and some silver mist to it. I also added a small cluster at the top to cap the line, though it's not part of the original sketch.

Advent Joy

I've already completed all four of the Advent Calendar challenges in For the Love of Pretty Paper (five stash items and a technique each time) but Natalie sprung an additional challenge on us at the end - to use our choice of 10 of the 24 things together on a page. To be honest, I'm beginning to know how Natalie's mind works so this one wasn't much of a surprise to me but I'd been expecting a higher number than the ten that she set, so I set out to use as many items from our list as possible. We had sparkly washi tape, flair (or similar), 6x6 papers, black alphabet stickers, mist, hand-sewing, tiny word stickers, puffy stickers, Project Life cards (or paper cut to PL card sizes), sequins, gold alphabet stickers, stamping, gold washi tape, wood veneer, small tile alpha stickers, a roller date or phrase stamp, a 'cut-apart' paper, watercolour background, ephemera, mixed media, chipboard, a large word, hearts and DIY embellishments.

I printed a collage of photos from the Advent Calendar Swap that I organised last autumn and cut the Brown Paper Packages Background file from Just Nick on my Silhouette. I chose green for my watercolour background, added acrylic paint through a stencil, stamped the star pattern and used mist for both painting and spattering. I backed the cut file with pieces from 6x6 papers, matted the photo on a PL card and a cut-apart square, and stitched a circle on my page. Having included all the paper and techniques, it was time to add as many of the other items as I could while keeping the page harmonious.

I placed most things in threes, making a series of triangles around the photos, including a one made up of my black Thickers and two black brads (rather than flair). It was surprisingly easy to keep adding bits and in the end I used all 24 items from the list (if you accept JOY as a large word (which the ladies of FTLOPP did)).

Go Blues!

Sketch-n-Scrap run cyber-crops on Facebook as well as publishing new sketches on their blog, and I made this page from a sketch in their 'Be Merry & Bright' crop.

I chose a couple of photos from when my daughter's Explorer Scout Unit went paintballing earlier this year, and teamed them with Simple Stories' Awesome collection. I flipped the sketch and added an extra triangle of patterned paper as there was a motorbike on the background paper that I wanted to cover up.

Angel of the North

I'm back with another page from Stuck?! Sketches, using the second of their December sketches.

I'm still scrapping pages at random, and these photos are from April. We spent Easter in Northumberland and on our way home we visited the Angel of the North, Antony Gormley's statue outside Gateshead. 

I originally intended to keep pretty close to the sketch, but near the end I decided to flip the positions of the three photos while keeping the papers as they were.

Selfies for Six

Sometimes photos just can't wait to be scrapped; I finished this page within a couple of days of the photos being taken. A group of us went out for a meal last week, and took a few selfies afterwards. We weren't too good at getting us all in the frame, and we got a waiter to take another photo afterwards, but I like the selfies more than the posed shot as they have so much more character. 

I picked the 1st December sketch from Stuck?! Sketches for my page, rotated for landscape photos, and combined it with the second Advent challenge in the For the Love of Pretty Paper Facebook group. One of the admin there is opening a calendar envelope each day for six days and then we have to use five stash items and a specific technique on a page. Last  week the items were word stickers, puffy stickers, Project Life cards (or paper cut to PL card sizes), sequins and gold alphabet stickers, and the technique was stamping.

I picked a background paper with a pattern in opposite corners and added my stamping and sequins and a spattering of gold mist to the printed snowflakes. All the other papers came from a 6x6 pad - lots of strips plus two papers cut to 4x6 and 3x4 to substitute for the Project Life cards. I layered the larger pieces behind the photos with a couple of doilies and cut all the paper strips in two so that I could stretch them across the page with the photos covering the gaps.

Artist at Work

I'm trying to fill in a few gaps in my 2017 album, and this page comes from July, when my husband exhibited at a local Arts and Crafts Fair, including demonstrating the art of watercolour painting.

I wanted a slightly 'painty' feel to my background so I smooshed silver mist onto the page using the packaging technique and spattered more silver and aqua mists along the diagonal. I used a 6x6 pad for the layers along with a doily to break up some of the straight lines and corners. Washi tape at the top and bottom of the page gave it some boundaries, and I finished off with translucent enamel shapes.

Here We Go Again

I'm not feeling particularly motivated by my cruise photos at the moment so, rather than force myself to do those pages and potentially be dissatisfied with the results, I'm switching away for a while.

I'm combining a couple of stash challenges for this page, with photos from last weekend. For the last four years we've headed up to the Lake District each December for a black tie ball; it's fabulous excuse to break out our posh frocks and a great start to the Christmas season. 

First up was an Advent Calendar 'Grab Five' challenge in the For the Love of Pretty Paper Facebook group. One of the admin is opening a calendar envelope each day for six days and we have to use five stash items and a specific technique on a page. This week's items were sparkly washi tape, flair or similar, 6x6 papers, black letter stickers and mist, plus hand-sewing for the technique. I cut and stretched the 6x6 papers and substituted large brads for flair.


I'm also linking to this month's tic-tac-toe challenge at Scrap Our Stash. My original intention had been to do one of the diagonals - mist, holiday theme and sequins - but I forgot all about the sequins and used wood veneer stars instead. I was going to go back and add them, but then I realised that I had the middle row instead - journal card, holiday theme and something gold (doily, washi tape and mist).

Felix

Time for the last sketch from Lottie Loves Paper's Five Sketches in Five Days. It was actually Sketch 1, but I left it initially because I couldn't fit it to the photos from our cruise. 

Eventually I chose to scrap some baby photos instead; these were shared by my husband's cousin when Felix was born in August. I wanted to use blues, and soft patterns for this page, but I sorely underestimated the amount of blue patterned paper in my stash. The background is a baby boy paper, with a whale print that's hard to see in this photo. I also picked a darker blue which I cut into various width strips, tore the ends and machine-stitched to the page.

The page I scraplifted.

This was the fourth and final page that I made in the recent Scrap Whispers game at UKScrappers. We've passed a scrapbook page from one person to the next and scraplifted it in turn, and I was last to play in this chain.

I initially picked a single photo for my page, but then decided that I could squeeze in a few small ones as well. They come from Gilwell 24, 24 hours of scouting activities held each summer in Gilwell Park, which my daughter and her friends attended earlier this year.

I kept the inked background, the two paper panels, the placement of the large photo in the corner, and the scattering of embellishments, but this is by no means a faithful copy of the page I was given.

Wet & Wacky

I'm stepping away from the cruise photos for a brief interlude caused by the game of Scrap Whispers that's just finished over at UKScrappers. The game involves passing a page from one person to another in turn with each one scraplifting the person before them to produce a chain of related pages. 

The page that I received from Craftpopsy at the start of the second week was a lovely mixed media piece that I knew just wouldn't fit with the other cruise pages, so I had to switch to something else. I don't have very many single photos left, and nothing that I wanted to crop and scrap in this style, so I mulled it over for almost a week before I got going with this page. 

My daughter is an explorer scout and her leader recently posted some photos on Facebook from an outdoor games evening. They weren't great quality, and I might not ordinarily have scrapped them, but they were a good subject for the playful nature of that run of circles. I decided to use two of them and picked a 6x6 pad with some soft greens, yellows and aquas for my circles.

I started the right side page with distress inks and the packaging technique, smooshing a mix of ink and water on to the page, used a stencil for a grid of dots (which mostly got covered up) and flicked three colours of mist over the top. On the left, I changed Craftpopsy's hearts to stamped stars and coloured them in with the same distress ink. I cut and layered up my circles before stamping asterisks on and around them, and adding tiny pearls. Finally I spattered another colour of mist over the circles and doodled a border around the right side of the page which was feeling unfinished.
