Festung Hohensalzburg

Last page from Austria last year, and it's another double. This one comes from our second day when we visited Salzburg and its fortress. I kept putting it off I had a load of photos of both the outside of the buildings and the inside of the state apartments. Once I was committed to tackling this page I made a 'shortlist' of pictures and realised that the double page I'd intended might not be enough. Shimelle to the rescue, as I used another class from her 4x6 Photo Love series; the November class was designed for eleven 4x6 photos on a double page with a 12x6 divided page protector in between, though I adapted it for eight 4x6s and four 4x3 photos.

The left page and front of the divided page protector have photos of the outside of the fortress and the first part of my journalling:

The back of the divided page protector has photos of the chapel, more journalling (with one of our tickets tucked behind) and the view from one of the windows; the right page has photos of the state rooms, also known as the Regency Rooms.

I still have quite a few papers left from the kit I'm using, but I tried to use scraps for the page rather then cutting into any new sheets.

Mozartblick

This is the penultimate page from Austria last year. I haven't worked in chronological order, but it's actually the last but one that I will make, and will also be last but one in the album. 

We walked up to a viewpoint above the lake on our last morning, and I wanted to include both a large photo of the view and some smaller ones from the walk on my page. I took a class from Shimelle Laine called The 20 Project last year, and this double page design came from one of her prompts. She had used 10 small photos on the left and a 4x6 print on the right, but her design was very adaptable to different numbers and sizes of photos.

I've been working with Pink Paislee's Atlas collection for this section of my album, but I didn't have two papers the same left for my background. I've used dotted Swiss cardstock for some of my double page backgrounds, but I wanted a pattern here as so much of the background is on show. I thought a soft yellow would be best with this set of photos and found two pieces from Dream Street Papers (which are undated, but so old that they are single-sided).

I had planned two areas of embellishment, one on each side, but once I added my title it seemed obvious to fill the space next to it with a third, smaller cluster.

On the Pilgrim's Way

Today I'm sharing another page from our holiday in Austria last year. We were staying on the edge of Wolfgangsee, and my husband decided to spend a day walking the 27km path around the edge of the lake. Many of his photos were similar to those we took when we visited the lakeside villages earlier in the week, so my page concentrates on a section of path known as the Pilgrim's Way. The way is marked by a series of stone crosses and passes a small church on the mountainside on the site where St Wolfgang lived in the 10th century.

My page is a scraplift of another 2016 page, which breaks my 'rule' about repeating page designs within an album, but I don't expect anyone to notice.

Nancy's Page @ Hey Little Magpie

This is the last page from a day in Austria last summer when took the train to the summit of Schafberg and then walked back down to our hotel in St Gilgen. I've picked five photos from the walk itself and scraplifted a page from Nancy that I saw on the Hey Little Magpie blog. 

I really like the combination of the grid of photos together with a much looser section of embellishment on Nancy's page, and I did my best to replicate that, while also keeping back some space for journalling.

Schafberg

I'm sharing another page from our day on Schafberg in Austria last summer when we took the train to the top of the mountain and then walked back down. This photo was taken of the peak from the alm below and I decided to give it a page to itself, printed at 6x8.

I based the page design on one of the sketches from July's challenge in the For the Love of Pretty Paper Facebook group, but adjusted it for one photo, with a single large embellishment cluster to the left of it. I also moved the title (cut on my Silhouette) down to the bottom of the page.

Schafbergbahn

Another Austrian page today, from the day we went up Schafberg, the mountain above the village of St Wolfgang which I featured on my last page. We used the cog railway, the Schafbergbahn, to get to the top, and then walked back down to the village of St Gilgen where we were actually staying.

I picked out three photos of the railway and used Sketch 134 from Sketch-n-Scrap for my page. My photos are a bit bigger so I adjusted the paper pieces to suit them.

This page came together really quickly for me; a combination of a good sketch, a pre-determined kit of papers to work with and copying embellishment elements from other Austrian pages all helped with this.

St Wolfgang

Well, I've managed to keep on track for two consecutive posts, and I'm sharing another page from our time in Austria last year. This one is from St Wolfgang, another village on Wolfgangsee, which we visited on the same day as Strobl (the last page I shared).

I had six photos that I wanted to include; originally five of them were portrait-oriented while one of the village from the lake was a landscape, but I decided to swap that one for a sixth portrait photo and use the June class from Shimelle's 4x6 Photo Love series. This is an older class, which ran throughout 2011, but I've used several of the layouts more than once over the years. It started out with one 4x6 photo in January and added a photo a month through to twelve 4x6 photos on a page in December.

The June class was for six photos, all portrait, lined up across the width of a double page, but slightly offset with blocks of patterned paper, and with long strips above/below the photos.

I used a strong repeating pattern for the strips above and below the photos, and three white-based papers for the paper blocks. The embellishment is a mixture of fussy-cut paper pieces, washi tape, word stickers and enamel shapes, and I journalled on paper strips placed around the page.

Strobl

I've not been scrapbooking with any consistency of subject recently, but I'd really like to get my 2016 albums finished. One hole in that album is our summer holiday in Austria; I haven't even worked out exactly which photos will be scrapbooked or how many pages I need for some of the days yet, so I've decided to have a bash at some of those pages now before I get inundated with new pictures from this year's summer holiday.

I'm starting with the village of Strobl, which we visited as part of a day exploring the villages around Wolfgangsee by lake ferry. Sorting through the pictures, I decided on using five of them, and on scraplifting a previous page. 

I'm using Pink Paislee's Atlas with an assortment of co-ordinating papers for this section of my album, and I've kept them in a separate box since I made the last Austrian page (eight months ago - eek!) so it was easy enough to pull them out again.

Going Up

Still in Austria for this page, with pictures from a summer toboggan run. This is something that I've only seen in Austria; we went on one two years ago too (Rodelbahn). There are two tracks on the hillside, you are pulled up one on your toboggan and then you move across to the other track to hurtle back down again. Great fun, and slightly scary going round the corners.

Sadly we only have photos of us going up; whether this is due to camera malfunction or operator incompetence hasn't been settled yet. Our daughter had her hand over her face in her photo, so I'm using two of our son and me. They are so similar that they didn't sit well next to each other on the page so I looked for an alternative layout among recently published sketches, turning up this one from Stuck?! Sketches. I flipped it horizontally to suit the direction we are facing in the photos and moved the journalling down below the title. That title is clearer in real life, but I do wonder if I should have used darker letters for it.

Burgl

We spent one day of our holiday in Austria this summer using the ferry from my last page to visit all the lakeside villages. As we approached one called Strobl, we could see a wooden walkway running round this hill to the left of the village. A quick look at the map revealed a circular walk around the hill (called Burgl which I think means little mountain).

I picked one large photo plus two smaller ones and arranged them in a grid with spaces left for title and journalling. Dead simple but I like it; this way the focus is on the photos.

Wolfgangsee Schifffahrt

I do love a German compound word, and I'll use a few of them for my page titles for our Austrian holiday. Schifffahrt means something like ship-ride and is the ferry service on Wolfgangsee (or Lake Wolfgang). My page has photos of two of those ships - Kaiser Franz Josef I is a paddle steamer built in 1873, the first ferry on the lake and still in use during the summer months, and Österreich, a more modern ship that we actually travelled on. We spent a day using the ferries to visit the other villages around the lake.

One of the prompts in Shimelle's Design Decisions class was about using grids, but her page wasn't what I expected. I think of grids meaning all the elements on the page being the same size and shape, but Shimelle put a grid of embellishments and journalling alongside standard 4x6 photos. My page is similar, but I didn't have room to journal on my grid so I moved that to the top of the page.

We Are Sailing

This is another Austrian page, with a family photo taken on board the lake ferry. I worked from one of the prompts in Shimelle's Design Decisions class, but used a larger photo instead of a small one and a journalling block.

Tubing Today

My daughter and I went tubing in Austria, sitting in big rubber rings and being pulled round the lake  by a speedboat. We'd never done anything like it before and it was such fun. I picked three photos and printed them at 4x6 for this page. I used a default layout for three landscape pictures, stacking them in a column, but I overlapped them slightly and used small angles to convey a sense of fun rather than stacking them in line for a more serious look.

I've made many similar pages in the past, and I normally put the title and journalling near the bottom of the page; this time I decided to change that and put them near the top. I was going to use a tag for the journalling but I found this one with the word 'Today' on it and turned it into part of my title and wrote directly on the background instead.

Elektroboot

As you might have guessed, elektroboot is German for electric boat, and we hired one while in Austria this summer. It was really peaceful to be pootling around on the water in complete silence (or it would have been if the children hadn't kept squabbling over who had had the longer turn at driving).

I picked out four photos for the page, two of the children and two of shrines that we saw from the water. I wanted a casual look to the page, rather than lining up the pictures in a row or block, and I went back to the October 15th sketch from Stuck?! Sketches. 

My larger photos and the mix of orientations meant that I had to move some elements around and my page evolved as I worked, though I made sure to keep the two circles with the major embellishment clusters. 

I had cut the chevron pieces for another page but not used them and I love them here. There's not actually much from Atlas on this page but I've repeated elements like the tag and the filmstrip paper from other Austrian pages so I think it will still fit in.

Mini Golf

Our holiday in Austria was a mixture of activities in the village where we were staying and days of exploring further afield. The activity days are somehow easier to scrap, and this page has a set of photos from playing mini golf on our last day.

I used an older sketch here - the mid-July sketch from Sketch-n-Scrap - but with an extra picture in the row that spans the page. I used a few inks and mists on the central panel - spraying yellow mist in the middle, adding diagonal spatters in gold and inking through the paper I had left from die-cutting chevrons for another page.

I cut the embellishment down to two clusters and used another woodgrain geotag (repeating the motif first used on my Gasthof zur Post page). This time I balanced it with a wood veneer camera at the top which I coloured using distress inks; that camera means that I am linking up with Rochelle Spears' November 'This or That' challenge which is to use cork or wood on a page.

St Gilgen

St Gilgen is the village in Austria where we stayed this summer, and I scraplifted myself for this page, taking inspiration from the Jamboree page that I made a few months ago. However this time I've flipped the design horizontally and doubled the number of photos. The main picture is a view of the village from the lake, the town hall is next to it and the smaller photos are a statue of St Gilgen himself and some alpine horn players.

I've had that star vellum for a couple of years and used it on many pages, always gutting it to stretch it as far as possible. Sadly that it the last scrap that I have, cut in two to stretch it one final time. I've copied the star motif into my embellishments using three sizes of acetate stars for large, medium and small clusters which help frame the page.

Hello Salzburg

Shimelle recently started a new class called Design Decisions and each lesson includes a sketch. I made this page from the first one, which actually had three small photos, but next up on my 'to scrap' pile was a single photo from Salzburg last summer so I made it work for that.

It's the view over Salzburg from the terrace at Fortress Hohensalzburg, which lies on the hill above the city.

Gasthof zur Post

I've no plans to make my pages from Austria in order, but this one will come fairly early in the album - it's the hotel that we stayed in. The Gasthof zur Post in St Gilgen is more than 600 years old and full of quirky touches like the vintage luggage on the landings.

I used Sketch #116 from Sketch-n-Scrap for this page, keeping fairly close to the original in the paper layers but moving the embellishments around.

I'm supposed to be working from a kit of papers for my Austrian pages, but I've already pulled in two more - the red floral and the filmstrip were not in my original selection. I cut the geotag from a Simple Stories card, and repeated its wood-grain pattern in two other places.

I've also put my Big Shot to use, cutting both the title letters and the chevrons on it.

Bürgermusik 150

It's been a while since I made a page from a sketch at Stick It Down, but their November sketch caught my eye.

Bürgermusik St Gilgen, the Citizen's Band, were celebrating their 150th anniversary as we arrived in Austria, and I have loads of photos of the various local brass bands marching through the village. 

I had printed ten photos at just less than 3" by 3" intending to use nine of them in three rows of three but this sketch changed my plans. Four photos just fitted the width of the page on a slight diagonal and I changed the spotty panels at the top and bottom to follow the same angle. I wrote my journalling between the rows of spots and added embellishment clusters to opposite corners.

I'm also linking up with Shimelle's latest weekly challenge - go big with red - as red is the dominant colour on the page. I didn't use it in large areas but it repeats across the page and a little red goes a long way. I wonder now if my title should have been red too, but that seemed too much at the time and it's too late to change it now.
