The Last Leg

Nothing to do with the TV programme, these are the last two pages from our Norwegian cruise, covering the two sea days en route back to Southampton. I've been using divided page protectors and 6x6 pads for this album, and I'm down to scraps now, perfect timing though I had to piece together the papers for a few of the pockets.

The front starts with a title card and then a couple of pictures of the signts of the North Sea (ships and oil rigs). The middle row has photos from the final Formal Night and the Baked Alaska parade. The bottom row has some from the crew show and the final pocket has a few stats about the food and drink consumed this cruise.

On the back we start with some journalling, a photo of the helicopter used for a medical evacuation and then the White Cliffs of Dover as we passed. The second row has a photo (cut in two) from when the Cruise Director interviewed the Captain and then the Farewell Show. The final row has the refuelling ship in Southampton, a few stats and a postcard with all the company's ships, to which I added the words 'Where Next?'

So, all finished? No, not quite. I missed part of a page earlier in the album where I became stuck and I now have some ideas of how to finish that one. Also, it's been three and a half years since I started this album so I want to go back, review all the pages and add more embellishment to some of the earlier ones where I started using things part way through.

Getting Up Close

I'm nearly at the end of my Norwegian cruise album now, and I have two pages today from when we sailed through the islands at the mouth of the Nordfjord. Larger ships would have to sail straight out of the fjord, but our ship was small enough to manouvre through the more interesting route. 

I thought this would need one side of the divided page protectors that I am using, but it spread across two. I started on the front with a title pocket, three photos, a map and lots of journalling. The photos are of a tiny island that we passed, the start of sunset and the waterfalls on a larger island.

and continued on the back with five more photos - the islands we passed, Mt Hornelen and the receding coast as we left Norway behind - with even more journalling.

On the Bridge

The bridge of a cruise ship is normally out of bounds to passengers, but the Kids' Club tend to get invited to visit. Presumably children aren't considered to be a security risk. I made sure my daughter had a camera and tasked her with taking photos for this page in the scrapbook. 

Four of these are hers, showing different areas of the bridge, the view through the front 'window' and the lifeboats from the bridge wing. I have a photo of the tenders in the last pocket and I've repeated the technique of cropping and matting this photo to separate it slightly from the others as it wasn't taken from the bridge, but from the promenade deck, lower down the ship.

I used a lot of this hexagon patterned paper earlier in the album but almost ran out. I've included the last few pieces here as well as scraps of map vellum from an earlier page.

Old & New

I'm still in Olden, the last port of call from our 2013 Norwegian cruise, for this page. Olden has two churches - the 'old' one was built in 1759 but has no heating or electricity so, in 1934, the villagers built the 'new' church so that the old one could be preserved in its original state.

We visited both churches so this page has 4x6 photos of the outsides and insides of each. The last pocket has smaller photos of the altar from the old church and the stained glass from the new.

Olden

Back to my Norwegian cruise album now; Olden was our last port of call, so the end is in sight. I'm sharing three pages in this post and I have a couple more coming up soon.

I've started this page as I've started every new destination - title, map and journalling about the village. This was a tender port (which means we anchored offshore and used the ship's lifeboats (also known as tenders) to go ashore) so I have a photo of one of the boats being lowered to the water. The pocket headed 'Plan B' is about a change of plan for the day. Olden is close to the Briksdal glacier which we had planned to visit via local bus rather than on the vastly overpriced ship's tour. Unfortunately that bus (the only one) was already full when it reached us so we had to re-think our day.

We decided to explore the valley south of Olden, where a waterfall and lake were marked on our map. The second page is taken up with pictures of the walk along the river and then the waterfall. 

We continued along the river above the waterfall as far as Lake Floen, a beautiful glacial lake with perfect reflections of the surrounding scenery. My husband walked right round the lake, but the rest of us returned to Olden along the main road. The buildings in the last pocket were on the road, not by the lake, so I cropped and matted the photo to separate it from the others.

Look Around

I have another page for my Norwegian cruise album for you today. I'm doing this album with divided page protectors and an aqua, yellow and grey colour scheme.

This is the last page from our day in Kristiansund; please scroll back if you are interested in the four that precede it. I've covered the 'story' of the day in the previous pages, but I still had a number of pictures that I wanted to include in the album. Most of them need a little explanation, so I've started the journalling for each one with the word 'look'.

We are looking up to Bautaen, across to Innlandet, down at the manhole cover and out to the sunset. I don't know if you can see it, but the final photo has another ship, Cunard's Queen Victoria, on the horizon.

Bautaen

Another Norwegian title for you today; Bautaen is the Memorial Stone, and this one is on the highest point of the island of Innlandet in Kristiansund. We'd caught the ferry from the main island and walked up to this point overlooking the harbour.

The memorial in question is to a battle in 1808 when two English warships attacked the harbour and were repulsed by the town's defences. The stone is flanked by working cannons which are used to fire salutes on high days and holidays.

The two photos in the bottom row are views of Kirkelandet, a wide-angle view and also a close-up of the area we had visited earlier in the day.

Varden

I'm sharing another page from Kristiansund today; Varden is a watch tower, on the highest point of the island. I'm using a divided page protector with a 6x8 pocket that I picked for my vertical photo, and I added title and journalling to the same pocket. The two view photos were taken from the top of the tower.

We were following a guided walk around the town and that walk took us from the tower back to the waterfront. The bottom photos are a shipyard and the inner harbour.

This page is rather photo heavy, and I had to crop two of my pictures to 4x4 in order to squeeze in the journalling here.

Kristiansund

I've made five pages from Kristiansund, the next port of call in our Norwegian cruise, but I'm splitting them across several posts to cover different areas of our visit. Kristiansund is spread across four areas on three islands, and I'm starting with two pages from Kirkelandet.

I'm working with divided pages for this album and picked one with three 4x6 and six 4x3 pockets. The front starts in the same way that I've started each port, with a title card, a map and some journalling about the town. The main photos are from our arrival, a shot under one of the bridges into the harbour and a view of Kirkelandet where we berthed. The three smaller photos are statues and the war memorial, all from the same area on the quay.

The four areas of Kristiansund are linked by the harbour ferry, which we used to get around, and the top row of the next page is about that; a photo, some journalling and our ferry tickets. I'd downloaded a walking tour of the town, and the rest of the photos are from that. The building is a church (!) and the remaining pictures were taken in Vanndamman, a park with ponds that used to be drinking water reservoirs for the town.

Heading South

This page from our cruise album is something of a filler, and uses a different size of page protector - 6x12. Up until now I've used a variety of 12x12 divided page protectors and having each protector suit the photos on both the front and back has been an exercise in forward planning; looking ahead at upcoming photos that I want to include, and planning several related pages at the same time has been the hardest thing about this project. 

We had two days at sea between Ny-Ålesund and our next port of call Kristiansund and although I have enough photos for a 12x12 page, I realised that this would cause problems for my portrait-oriented photos in a few pages time. So... I've gone for 6x12 here so that I can get my portrait photos back-to-back in a pocket later on. 

The front of this page actually has three photos from the end of our day in Ny-Ålesund - a final view of the fjord, a pod of dolphins who turned up mid-dinner and a still from the evening show. The title, Heading South, matches up with the Heading North page that I made for our outward voyage.

The back of this page covers two whole days; by this time our sea day activities were a familiar routine and I didn't take many photos but if I had they would just have been repeats from earlier in the album anyway. The top one is the 'view' from on deck as we had bad weather for these days, the outside doors were closed on one of them so we couldn't go outside at all. Still, I'd rather have rain on sea days than port days and we were very lucky with the weather on this trip.

The second pocket has a couple of photos from a fun session of Can't Cook, Won't Cook and the third is from the British-themed night, with a flag-waving sing-along and my son in his Union flag onesie. I originally was going to use 'All at Sea' as the title for the whole page, but the empty spaces on the other cards were just begging for titles too.

Kongsfjord

Just one page for you today, and although it's from Ny-Ålesund, it's about the fjord and glacier there, Kongsfjord and Kongsbreen, the King's Fjord and the King's Glacier. The glacier meets the water at two points at the head of the fjord, and these photos were taken from the ship where we were moored.

The first photo is an overview showing both arms of the glacier, second is a close-up of the left end, the part nearest our ship. The third large photo is an even closer shot of the left end, and the final picture is the part of the glacier on the right of the first photo, furthest from our ship.

The middle row has an even closer close-up of the glacier, my journalling and two iceberg pictures.

Ny-Ålesund

I'm sharing three cruise pages today, all from Ny-Ålesund in Svalbard. They all share the same main title card, but I do have sub-titles for some sections.

The first page follows the pattern I've adopted for each of our ports of call, with pockets for the name, a map, photos of our arrival and some journalling. Ny-Ålesund used to be a coal-mining settlement but these days it is a centre for arctic research and the most northerly permanent settlement in the world. It lies on Kongsfjord and I have a photo of the fjord in the top right pocket. The bottom photos are the settlement and a short loop of road that we could walk around just outside.

The second page is the back of the first, and concentrates on how far north we were, 770 miles from the North Pole. Ny-Ålesund has the most northerly hotel, restaurant, post office, museum, shop, camp site, sewage farm, locomotive and statue so I have photos of some of those. The locomotive is a relic of the mining era and was abandoned in 1970, though I have read online that it is currently being restored in Sweden.

My third page will lie opposite this one, and I used the same design of page protector. Top left is a shot of the tundra landscape and top right is my son and a sign which reads "POLAR BEAR DANGER - Do not walk beyond this sign without a weapon." Also, none of the buildings in the settlement are allowed to be locked, just in case someone needs to take shelter from a marauding polar bear. 

Three pockets in the middle row are devoted to Roald Amundsen, who launched several polar expeditions from here, and the row finishes with an arctic tern. I completed the page with a family photo and one of the ship.

PM

I struggled with a title for this page; there's no story, very little journalling. It's really just a collection of photos from the afternoon and evening of our day in Longyearbyen. If I'd been making a more conventional album then they would never have all appeared on the same page, but one of the reasons that I originally decided to use divided page protectors for this album was so that I could get more pictures on each page. I eventually came up with 'PM' as a pseudo-title and added the times to some of the photos using tiny alpha stickers from KaiserCraft.

The top two are actually in the wrong order chronologically, but the sky of the ship photo was the perfect place for my title box and I didn't like having it at the top right of the page; I do like it to be in the first pocket if possible, so I swapped them over. So, we have the ship first, then a view of Longyearbyen once the fog from earlier in the day had lifted, and to contrast with our arrival photo a few pages back. The middle row all belongs together so I used the same background paper across the page; the four pockets hold three photos from an ice carving demonstration plus a bit of journalling. The page ends with a couple of photos of the scenery as we cruised down the Isfjord en route to our next port of call.

Advent Valley

I'm sharing another cruise page today; it's slow progress but I'm determined to get this album done before we cruise again this summer (hopefully long before then, but we'll see how it goes). We're still in Longyearbyen and it was the turn of my daughter and me for a trip; ours was a more gentle affair than the boys' glacier hike and we headed into the Advent Valley for a nature walk.

I've used the most common page protector for this page as I have a run of horizontal photos coming up. I almost always have the title in the top left pocket, and this time it holds the majority of my journalling too. I filled the other three 4x6 pocket with photos - a view of the valley, my daughter and me, and a reindeer.

The middle row has two smaller photos and more journalling specifically about them. On the left is our guard; I'm not joking about polar bear danger on Spitsbergen and you can't leave the town without a rifle. On the right is some arctic cotton, a species that thrives here despite the long arctic winter and the very short growing season in summer.

Hike - Longyear Glacier

I have another page from our Norwegian cruise album today, an album with divided page protectors and a blue/yellow/grey colour scheme. We went as far north as cruise ships go, to Spitsbergen, and my husband's main ambition for the trip was to walk on a glacier. He and our son took a ship's tour from Longyearbyen to the Longyear Glacier and his wish was granted. We don't normally use ship's tours, preferring to explore on our own, but there is a very real danger from polar bears here so there was no alternative.

I was working on the back of the previous page protector for this page, but I'd chosen this design to accommodate the vertical photo of our son on the glacier and that went in the large 6x8 pocket along with the title.

The top and middle photos on the right show the terrain that they were crossing, bottom left has a closer shot of the glacier and bottom right a fossil that one of the guides found.

Longyearbyen

I'm continuing with the album from our 2013 Norwegian cruise today, with two pages from Longyearbyen in Svalbard. This album ought to be coming together quite quickly as I'm working with divided page protectors and 6x6 pads, but it's really tricky deciding which page protectors to use where and what size to print each photo. 

The first page is on the back of my last one so that was one decision made; I have to work with the pockets I have. I think this may be my favourite combination of pockets, a mix of portrait and landscape slots, but I only have a few of this design. 

Obviously my title needed to go in that long 2x12 pocket and next I filled the top-left pocket with a watercolour map of Spitsbergen (from stamen.com; I have used these maps for each port we visited) plus a bit of information about the town. Next to that we have a small photo and some journalling for our foggy arrival. Below that, the large photo is the view from ship to town along the coast later in the day and the small one at the bottom is a close-up of a disused aeriel tramway on the hillside. The bottom left pocket has two road signs from the town; the polar bear danger is real here.

For the next page, I had a batch of landscape photos, but I knew that I had a portrait photo to go on the back so I chose a page protector with four 4x6 horizontal landscape pockets and one 6x8 vertical pocket. This meant that all the journalling on this side had to go in one large block. The photos are: my daughter with a polar bear sculpture; a row of wooden house; huskies in a compound on the edge of town; arctic terns.

Heading North

One project that's been on my mind recently is the album that I started for our cruise to Norway in 2013. We're cruising again later this year and it would be nice to finish that one before we go. Looking back at my blog I did the last page for this album in September 2014, more than two years ago, so it's high time I picked it up again.

I'm working with divided pages for this album, and a yellow, blue and grey colour scheme using four different 6x6 pads plus a few coordinating 12x12 papers. I've kept the supplies in a separate box all this time, so they were easy enough to pull out. I was stuck previously on a page as we left Nordkapp, so I'm leaving that one alone for now, and moving to the next day. 

As the title says, we were "Heading North" from the top of Norway to the Svalbard archipelago deep inside the Arctic circle. This was a day at sea so I don't have many photos; the two I wanted to feature were one landscape and one portrait so this dictated the page protector that I used.

Those main photos were one of Bear Island, which marked the approximate half-way point, and one of our children that evening when we had our second formal night. My title went in the 2x12 pocket and the map is cut from a sheet of Webster's Pages vellum. The middle pocket has some information about Bear Island, and the bottom one is a summary of our day, with pictures from Wii bowling (which can be tricky on a moving ship).

Nordkapp

These will be my last Norwegian pages for a while as I need to get some more photos printed. I've made a double page for Nordkapp - the North Cape. I've mentioned before that it claims to be the most northerly place on the European mainland, but that's a false claim for two reasons: firstly, the neighbouring point of Knivsfjellodden extends 1500m further north; secondly, both these points lie on an island, not the mainland at all!

However it's an impressive cliff, and the most northerly place reachable by road from the mainland, so it's a popular tourist destination. We went there by local bus rather than the ship's tour, and arrived as our shipmates were leaving, so it was curiously quiet there.

My left page concentrates on the iconic globe monument. The small photo in the first pocket is from our first visit in 2009, contrasting the weather and the crowds then with the perfect conditions this time.

My right page mostly has pictures of the various monuments dotted around the Nordkapp plateau, monuments that we couldn't see at all in the dense fog last time. At the top is "Children of the Earth" a set of seven discs made by seven children from different countries to symbolise cooperation, friendship, hope and joy across boundaries.

The yellow box explains about Nordkapp not being the most northerly place on the European mainland, and links with the photo of Knivskjellodden which is the most northerly point on the island, although a lot less impressive than Nordkapp, and only reachable by hiking 9km from the nearest road.

If 9km seems a bit tame, consider the E1 European long distance hiking path - it starts here and runs 7000km south through Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland to Scapoli in Italy.

Magerøya

Another divided page from me today, from our Norwegian cruise last year. I'm doing the whole album with divided pages, so I need to work chronologically and I've reached Honningsvåg in the north of the country.

The main reason that cruise ships stop in Honningsvåg is for the trip to the North Cape, falsely promoted as being the most northerly point in mainland Europe. We rejected the cruise ship tour in favour of using the local bus, and journeyed across the island of Magerøya, marvelling at the views and trying to spot some of the hundreds of reindeer that roam the area.

I only had a few photos, and I know that I need to display portrait-oriented photos on the back of this page, so I opted for a page with four 6x6 pockets:

Honningsvåg

Once upon a time, I was working on an album from the cruise to Norway and Svalbard that we took last summer, but I got distracted by other projects and have neglected this for too long.

I'm using divided page protectors for this album, an assortment of page configurations from American Crafts, and I'm getting the photos professionally printed one batch at a time. Somehow I only did half of the last batch, and I haven't ordered the third batch yet, though I want to rectify that soon.

I've reached day 7 of our 16 night holiday and the port of Honningsvåg, in the most northern region of Norway. I'm working on the back of my previous page, so the pocket sizes were pre-decided for me. I'm using a map for each port, which lies in the first pocket, alongside a view of the village as we approached. The middle row has photos of a sculpture called Der Noorderwind, and then both of my children with a troll, a Norwegian mascot.

The last two pockets have photos of the marina and the church. The town was largely destroyed during the war, and the villagers lived in the church while they rebuilt their homes.
