Acting Our Shoe Size

I'm sharing another Twilight Crafts DT page today in the catch-up of recent pages. I used the Numbers Background cut-file with photos of me and my mum on the swings earlier this year. 

I cut the numbers background from kraft cardstock and backed the open parts with patterned papers. I also added strips of the same papers to the top and bottom of the page and ticked in a couple of label stickers wthe the date and location. My title is inspired by the old saying 'Act your age not your shoe size' which I twisted round as we are definitely acting our shoe size here.

Hayburn Wyke

Back in the autumn I made a series of pages from our holiday in Yorkshire last Easter, and there's one more that I made then but didn't share here. This was for a walk to Hayburn Wyke, a cove near our holiday cottage with a small waterfall down onto the beach.

I took the main photo on the page when most of our group were arranged around the waterfall, but I don't think they were aware I was taking it. I originally printed it at 4x6 but the details were lost at that size so I reprinted it at 6x8 and I'm much happier with that. 

I've been using two collections for this holiday - Simple Stories Hello Today and Pebbles Seen & Noted. I'd originally intended to mix the two but it turned out that I prefer the pages when I use one collection at a time, and this page uses the Pebbles papers.

Keeping Watch

I'm still in Yorkshire today, with photos from the WW2 Bent Rigg Radar Station which was sited on the cliff top near Ravenscar.

I picked out two paper collections for this holiday (from Simple Stories and Pebbles) intending to mix and match them but, so far, each page has used predominantly one or the other with more being Simple Stories, so this one needed to use the Pebbles papers. I've also made several pages with horizontal bands of paper and only one with vertical bands, so I went for vertical again here. I had half a sheet of spotty paper left from another page and built up the rest of my background from there.

I matted my photos on different colours of cardstock, and arranged them around my title space. I then decided to mat both the title and my journalling card which gave definition to the edges and provided a buffer between the different shades of white.

Flatford Today

Today I'm sharing the first of two new pages that I made for The Mad Scrapper which are currently on the blog there. I've made four in total from a day in Flatford, Suffolk, which is where John Constable did a lot of his painting. Indeed, the first page I shared was a modern day view of the stretch of river where he painted The Hay Wain.

I made that page first, but it'll be third in my album; I'm not a chronological scrapper in the slightest. My new one will be first, and has four photos of the village and the river.

Not The Hay Wain

I'm back on The Mad Scrapper blog now with the first of four pages from Flatford in Suffolk, the heart of Constable country, where he painted The Hay Wain.

I used Vintage Artistry papers and ephemera from 49 and Market, a new company to me, but one I would highly recommend for the quality of their products. They have the thickest patterned paper I've ever seen, heavier than some cardstock, and the laser-cutting on their ephemera is faultless.

The Giant

I've come to the last of the 'Be Colourful' challenges from For the Love of Pretty Paper, and this was a mammoth one, to use all nine of the colours from previous weeks - sapphire, fuchsia, yellow, white, tangerine, purple, green, teal and scarlet.

Luckily, the Late Afternoon collection that I am using for my Dorset photos has most of the colours I needed, and I just had to add teal via another paper. I decided that the best way to use so many colours and patterns was via an orderly series of 1" paper strips. 

I split my page in two, with the strips in the bottom half and my photo in the top half with just one pattern behind it. I tried my title in a few places before settling on running it vertically on one of the plainer patterns.

I Do Love a Castle

Back to my Dorset pages now, and a couple of semi-random photos from Sunday afternoon. We saw both Lulworth Castle and Corfe Castle from a distance, but didn't properly visit either of them. However, as the title says, I do love a castle so I wanted them in the scrapbook, and decided to include them both on the same page.

I went with a quadrants design in order to show off the papers from Amy Tangerine's Late Afternoon collection, and distressed the outer edges of each square. I matted the photos together and tucked a few paper strips into their left edge along with a label, a die-cut leaf and an enamel heart. To the right of the photos, I punched a strip of woodgrain paper and layered it over the join between my papers to anchor a larger cluster of embellishments which includes a large floral motif cut from a 12x12 sheet. 

I nestled my title in close against the line of embellishments, and it leads directly into my journalling on the lines between the scallops of the paper below.

The Hardy Monument

Jenny's Page

I'm scraplifting along with the Scrap Squad over on Facebook again today. This time their lift #41 was a Hallowe'en page from Jenny Evans.

I'm scrapping another landmark from our Dorset holiday, the Hardy Monument atop Black Down. The Hardy in question is Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy who had been Nelson's flag captain at the Battle of Trafalgar.

I'm mostly using Amy Tangerine's Late Afternoon collection for my Dorset pages, but I pulled in an old Crate Paper sheet for my background as I thought the other papers needed a dark background. The wreath at the bottom of the page comes from the die-cut pack, but I cut the sentiment in the middle away and added the word explore instead.

Hello Stonehenge

I'm continuing with my "holiday" pages today, from a long weekend in Dorset which will be the only break we get this year. We passed by Stonehenge on the way, and I snapped a quick picture from the car.

I spotted this sketch when someone used it on Facebook, and traced it back to a July 2013 post from Liz Chidester at The Scrappiest Blogspot. She doesn't appear to be blogging any more but there are a few other sketches that I might go back to.

I'm using the paper pad from Amy Tangerine's Late Afternoon collection for my pages. One of the sheets is a cut-apart, and I used a section of it for the 'Hello' circle which starts my title. I couldn't bring myself to use three Es from my Thickers in one go, so I cut the rest on my Silhouette.

The White Lady

I'm going way back in the photo archives for this page (and the next few); back to 1993 when I was living in Devon.

I made it for a stamping challenge from For the Love of Pretty Paper; I had a new set of outdoors-themed stamps that I wanted to try out, but I wanted just one or two photos for that rather than the multiples that I take these days.

The photo that I used comes from Lydford Gorge, a place that I have visited and scrapbooked many times over the years; in particular, it's of the waterfall there, which is called the White Lady.

I started off with the leaf-print paper which I machine-stitched to the page and stamped lines of boot prints above and below it. I stitched the red paper in place too, and then layered up an assortment of scraps, including a circular element that I had cut and then rejected for a previous page. I stamped and cut out the signpost and camera, and added a few small die-cut pieces around the circle and by my journalling.

Grange Barn

This page was made for another challenge from For the Love of Pretty Paper; there were five themed around the letters S-C-R-A-P and for the 'R' challenge we had to use our choice of ribbon, rub-ons, rectangles and ric-rac plus the colour red.

I combined this challenge with Sketch #196 from Sketch-n-Scrap which I had to adapt to suit my mix of photos from Grange Barn in Coggeshall (Essex), one of the oldest timber-framed buildings in Europe. 

I had one portrait and one landscape photo which I placed side-by-side and cut my title to fill in the empty corner of a 5.5" x 9.5" block. This was a much wider photo block than the one in the sketch, but I layered my papers in a similar way behind it and added an embellishment cluster to the left side as indicated in the sketch, before deciding to add two more.

Stonehenge

I'm waiting on order of new photographs before I can continue with my cruise album, so I've decided to try and use up some of the 'starting point' pages that I've made previously. I do these to finish off collections or try out ideas, and then put them aside until I have suitable photos, and I have a few now piled up. I spread them all out on my desk and flipped through an older photo album to see if any would match up.

On this occasion, I paired a couple of photos from Stonehenge with a page I started to use up Fancy Pants' Little Sport collection. The photos were only 5" x 4" but were still a little large for the paper panels I'd stuck down; however they had a lot of grey sky so I cropped them down and matted them on a scrap of cardstock.

Once the photos were in place, it didn't take long to add a title, journalling, a sprinkling of mist and some stars and enamel dots as embellishments.

Montacute House

I've been working my way through my 2014 albums recently, filling in the gaps in chronological order and sharing them here in the same order. However, I'm going to skip forward to September now in order to share a page made from a Let's Get Sketchy sketch before the challenge closes at the end of this month. 

Montacute House is a stately home in Somerset, previously owned by the Phelips family, generations of whom stood as the local MP, and now in the care of the National Trust. 

The sketch shows three or four portrait photos, but mine are landscape so I switched it up to fit six in a similar space. I chose K & Co's Hannah collection for my page as the colours and patterns remind me of the faded grandeur of our stately homes. Having used extra photos instead of the journalling card indicated on the sketch, I journalled on paper strips below the photos and moved the title (cut on my Silhouette) to the side.

This was another page driven by a challenge. Lottie Loves Paper asked us to mix Something Old with Something New for one of their stash-busting challenges. I started out from the new; my most recent scrapbook order actually came from Lottie Loves Paper and contained the 6x6 pad and stickers from OneCanoeTwo's Creekside collection. These outdoors-y papers took me back to December when my husband and I spent a weekend in the Lake District. I printed three photos from a walk we took then and looked for a sketch that would work with my photos and papers, turning up one from Shimelle's 'Sketch to Scrapbook Page' series.

I had also bought a few 12x12 sheets from Creekside, but in order to mix old and new I picked out an older alternative from Studio Calico; it's labelled 2015 but I can't have had it that long as I first ordered from them in 2016. I mixed old and new in the embellishment too - the flowers are ancient, the woodgrain paper and heart puffy stickers are middling and the enamel dots and word stickers are new.

I also worked this page to a recent weekly challenge at UKScrappers; Elaine asked us to use a non-white background, two or more photos and a doodled element, so it's her fault that I doodled around the edge of the page.

Purple Haze

Something of a throwback today, as I made this page in May and haven't got round to sharing it here yet. It has its roots in a walk I did in April, when I went to see the bluebells in Blake's Wood, and I both planned the page while I was there and ensured that I had the variety of photos that I would need. 

I saved making the page until National Scrapbooking Day as I was sure that there would be a song title challenge (and there was) but in the end I entered it in a tic-tac-toe challenge from For the Love of Pretty Paper instead, choosing the right-hand column - no patterned paper, large photo and die cuts or punches. 

Perhaps surprisingly, I made the page exactly as I'd planned in my head; I printed my large photo on cardstock to get a softer image, machine-stitched around the edge, and layered a woodland view and a circular close-up over it. I kept the embellishment quite simple, with a chipboard swirl that I'd previously inked purple and then abandoned, plus a couple of punched butterflies and a scattering of gems.

I'll be sharing a mix of old and new pages here over the next few weeks; I have quite a few that I made for National Scrapbooking Day and shared at the time on Facebook, but I haven't blogged them yet. I saved them to fill a lull when I had one, but I've scrapped and blogged fairly consistently since then and the posts keep getting pushed back in favour of new stuff.

Dunstanburgh Castle

Back in May, Sarah posted 'Five Sketches in Five Days' in the Lottie Loves Paper Facebook group. I did three before I ran out of month, and had actually printed the photo and chosen a paper collection for the fourth, but got diverted into making Scrap Whispers/Chinese Whispers pages in June.

More recently, our router died and my computer and printer wouldn't talk to each other without it; I had to go back to pre-printed photos, and I picked up this page again.

The photo is from our Easter holiday in Northumberland, when we walked along the coast late one afternoon to Dunstanburgh Castle, a ruin on a headland that's not accessible by road. Being a page about a castle, there are no people in the photo, so I'm linking with The Studio Challenges blog, where a recent challenge was to scrap a page with no people.

I stuck fairly closely to the sketch, just moving the title cluster down to the bottom to get some separation between the two pieces of arrow print paper.

You Rock

This page came from the third of 'five sketches in five days' at Lottie Loves Paper on Facebook, originally published by Basic Grey. 

I decided to rotate it, and printed three photos of our friends' son from our Northumberland holiday earlier this year. Initially I went with the photo size from the sketch, but that didn't work for me and I reprinted them a bit larger.

All my papers (except the background) came from a 6x6 pad; the strip across the middle hides the joins in the vertical pieces that appear to be 12" long. The camera die is a new one by X-Cut, exclusive to Hobbycraft.

A Walk in Blake's Wood

Last Tuesday had long been earmarked for walking another section of the Capital Ring, but a Facebook post from the National Trust promoting the bluebell woods of East Anglia soon had me changing those plans and I headed off to Blake's Wood near Chelmsford for a woodland wander instead.

I normally share my walks in moderate detail, with the photos in order, but this one was a bit different; despite printing out a route from the National Trust website, once I'd parked the car I just headed into the woods in search of the bluebells, and I forgot to start the Map My Walk app up. 

This was my first glimpse, from the edge of the car park. 

Heading into the woods, the bluebells just kept getting better and better as I walked:

As my feet wandered, my thoughts wandered too; thinking about scrapbooking the walk I realised that I needed some close-ups too.

I followed the paths round in a loop and found myself back at the car park all too soon, so I set out again, into a different part of the woods, and this time I did start the Map My Walk app.

Nothing much to say about the route, so I'll just share a few more bluebell pictures.

I'll admit that I thought a bit more about scrapbooking while I walked; I planned the whole page in my head as I went along and decided that there was one more photo that I needed:

I'm going to print this photo on cardstock as my background (printing on cardstock gives a softer image than printing on photo paper) and layer a 4x6 print of one of the woodland views over the top or bottom edge, next to a smaller print of one of the close-up photos. I've even decided on a title - Purple Haze - but since this is a song title I'm not going to start the page before National Scrapbooking Day (6 May this year) as I'm expecting a song title challenge to be set then.
