Finishing My Canary Islands Album

In April 2022 I made the title page for my Canary Islands album and now, more than three years later, I've made the last. I generally end an album with a photo of the UK port as we return, sitting on some sort of pocket that holds our Cruise Log. This time I do have both of these elements, but this was a cruise during the pandemic, with all the restrictions that that entailed. I've largely ignored that fact as I made the album, but I have touched on it here with a paragraph of journalling on the left of the page. My pocket is much larger than usual as I have included some of the correspondence we received regarding Covid restrictions as well as the normal Cruise Log.

Another album finished, so I will be going back to my 2025 annual album next, before we go off on another adventure.

Pages from Tenerife

Today I'm sharing the pages from the last port of our Canary Islands cruise from 2021. That was Santa Cruz on Tenerife. I'd already made the sub-title page; they mostly follow the same design in this album, with a 5x7 photo of the town matted on a 6x8 paper and layered over four vertical strips:

70 & 71. Mount Teide, Ucanca Plain & The Roques of Garcia

A long title, but I put it in three fonts on three parts of this double page. I pulled in two new 12x12 sheets to create a half-and-half background; neither appears elsewhere but I have plenty of pink and a blue woodgrain elsewhere and all the other papers are repeats. The photos are all from a coach trip that we took to see Mount Teide, the highest point on the island (and in Spain as a whole).

72. Plaza de España

This is the main square in Santa Cruz, with a large pond and a memorial to the dead of the Spanish Civil War. I chose one of my last few remaining patterned paper backgrounds and gave each photo its own offcut of paper to sit on, while tucking in a few more scraps around the edges.

73. Iglesia.../Ermita.../Ermita...

We saw three churches in our brief look round the town, but didn't go inside any of them. I was originally only going to scrap the largest, but I only had one decent photo of it and the other two churches were quite cute so I've included all three on separate panels, a half-page and two quarters. I titled each part rather than the whole page.

74. El Auditorio de Tenerife

I'd started this page when I was last working on this album, and was clearly feeling the lack of remaining background papers even then, as this one is white cardstock that has been sprayed and stencilled and is badly warped, but I'm hoping it will flatten out in the album. I'm sure it was based on a sketch or scraplift but I don't recall whose. 

75. Castillo de San Juan Bautista

This page was loosely based on Shimelle's YouTube live video from 19 May, with a paper strip down the right side and stencilling on the background. The Fortress of St John the Baptist is a 17th century fort, built to protect the harbour. I printed two photos, with the second one showing how it is now overshadowed by the new Auditorio above.

76. La Recova

La Recova is the alternative name for the Market of Our Lady of Africa, and much shorter for a title. I arranged my photos on one of my largest scraps, then layered it over a couple more and tucked in a branding strip on the left. The right looked a little sparse so I punched a line of circles and tucked them in with a few puffy dots. This is something I did for a page from La Palma, and now it repeats later in the album. 

So that's all the pages from the last port done, and I've made all the onboard pages too, so just the return to Southampton and my front cover to go now.

Pages from La Palma

Having made my only missing page from Gran Canaria, I've completed three of the five Canary Islands that we visited in 2021 and I'm moving on to the island of La Palma.

Three of these pages are from a ship's tour we took to see more of the island. It's rare for us to do that but the Spanish public transport websites didn't fill me with confidence that we could make a similar trip by ourselves. 

My paucity of background papers remaining mean that I pulled in an extra paper for one of the single pages and used white cardstock with ink and a stencil for the double.

61. Plaza de Espana

I'd already printed three 4x6 photos, so I fell back on an old design favourite, lining them up in a column next to a stack of paper scraps from the rest of the album. I often put the photos on the left when I do this, so I've moved them to the right for a change and added a trio of tags on the left. 

62. Nuestra Senora de las Nieves

First stop on the tour was the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, patron saint of the island. It's quite plain on the outside but a riot of gold decorations on the inside.

63 & 64. Caldera de Taburiente

The main purpose of our tour was to visit the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, a crater formed by the collapse of a trio of volcanoes around 525,000 years ago. I went for a double page, originally printing 10 photos but culling two before I finished. I used four 6x8 paper across the double page, a decision sparked by seeing how nicely the printed design on the right-hand paper sat with the two 3x4 photos.

65. Cumbre Vieja by Night

We were on La Palma at the same time that a volcano was erupting (though well away from it) and we sailed past it in the evening. I've already scrapped a daytime photo and I decided to scraplift the page for the nighttime version. I wouldn't normally use the same page design twice in an album but I thought it would subtly tie the two together. They aren't completely identical as I have a larger photo this time and a different mix of papers.

Catedral de Santa Ana

I've picked up my Canary Islands album with a double page for the Catedral de Santa Ana in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a page that will finish off this section of the album.

My photos fell into four sets so I divided my page into quadrants based on four paper panels of about 11.5" x 5.5" each, one each for the outside of the cathedral, the courtyard of the attached museum, the inside of the cathedral and the views from one of the towers.

I've discovered that I'm perilously low on background sheets so I'm not going to cut into anymore 12x12s that could be backgrounds, and I think I'm going to have to either find other papers or fall back on white cardstock. I did look at buying more but Care Free is an old collection now (2020), I couldn't find more in the UK and postage from Australia (where I did find it in several stores) made it unacceptably expensive.

Returning to my Canary Islands Album

We did a cruise to the Canary Islands in 2021 and my album is unfinished, pushed aside by my wish to work on newer holiday albums as they came round. I have a lull now between finishing my Mediterranean Islands album and us going on the next cruise, so I'm hoping to finish the Canary Islands before we go.

I made some of the existing pages between April and July 2022, and then returned to the album between January and April 2023 so it's more than two years since I worked on it. I've been reviewing the pages so far and the gaps that are left. We visited five islands:

Lanzarote - complete

Gran Canaria - double page needed for Santa Ana Cathedral (photos printed)

La Gomera - complete

La Palma - five pages needed (photos printed for three)

Tenerife - only the sub-title page done, others not planned, three photos printed

I've also had to re-gather my supplies. I kept all the papers in a box so that part was easy. I'm using a mix of two collections for this album - Heidi Swapp's Care Free and Jen Hadfield's Peaceful Heart - which both have peach and green colour schemes. All my papers are single-sided so I cut up the cut-apart pages at the start.

However, the rest of my supplies had been absorbed back into my stash so I've been through my original supplies post and the album itself to identify and re-assemble those. As always, if I use anything new I will add it to the kit too.

Tenerife

I'm back with the last 'easy' page of my Canary Islands album, the sub-title page for our final island - Tenerife. All these have followed the same basic template (see last post) so this was a straightforward scraplift of the ones that went before it.

The main difference is that I am running out of subtle background papers now, so I stencilled a sheet of white cardstock. I've done this before in the album so it's another repeat.

Gran Canaria

I'm sharing another 'sub-title' page for my Canary Islands cruise album today; I make one of these for each port of call to make a clear divider between one place and the next. All the pages so far have followed the same template with a 5x7 photo matted on a 6x8 paper layered over four vertical strips of paper. 

We left Gran Canaria in the evening so I had two photos of the town of Las Palmas that I wanted to include in my album, views by day and by night. I considered making my normal sub-divider page with the daytime photo and making an extra page for the nighttime one but the way the album has planned out there isn't space for the extra so I decided to use both here. I printed them at 4x6, cropped the top and bottom of each image and matted them in a block. In order to provide continuity, I kept most other things on the page the same, with the 6x8 paper behind the photos, the four vertical strips and the island name in the same font.

The photo block looked best pulled slightly to the left rather than being centred, so I moved my main embellishment cluster to the right this time.

Ashes to Ashes

I'm returning to my Canary Island cruise album (again!) today, with a page from Santa Cruz on the island of La Palma. The Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge was erupting at the time of our visit and, although we were a safe distance away, there was plenty of volcanic ash to be seen on the streets. My page has a couple of photos, one of the main street and a close-up of some of the ash.

I built this page up with scraps from the album so far, taking a 6x9 piece as a base for my photos and title and tucking lots of smaller bits in around the edges. I gutted my background paper and used that piece both as a mat for my main photo and to die-cut my title letters.

After Dark

I've had a new batch of cruise photos printed recently, and that's enabled me to return to the start of the album and make a page for our departure from Southampton. This was a winter cruise so we set sail after dark, hence the title. I printed two photos - a 4x6 of the cruise terminal and a 3x4 of another ship - and arranged them in a block across the page with a filmstrip die-cut to fill in the remaining space.

I added torn paper strips above and below my photo panel and placed an extra paper at the top to hold my title and a few embellishments. I then added more embellishments over the filmstrip and tucked in half a journalling card (the other half is on another page) at the bottom next to a subtitle.

La Palma

I've not scrapped much recently, while I concentrated on a major de-clutter and reorganisation of my home-office-cum-craft-room. I've gone back to my Canary Island cruise album now and got re-started with a scraplift. I make sub-title pages for each port of call and had done two previously in the same way (Lanzarote and La Gomera) so it was an easy matter to pull them out and repeat the design.

This one is for the island of La Palma, with a 5x7 photo of the town taken from the ship, matted on a 6x8 paper layered over four different patterned strips. I made a cluster to the left of the photo as I have previously, and repeated the day of the week sticker on the right hand side. I've cut the island name on my Silhouette each time and added the town name above it in smaller letter stickers.

This is the last page I need to make for the island of La Gomera on our Canary Islands cruise. I had a couple of photos of the main street and a couple more of the oldest church on the island which lies on that street. I considered two pages, but that didn't really feel merited so I ditched one of the street photos and just used the other three.

I chose to place the photos in opposite corners on the page, sitting on L-shaped papers, an arrangement inspired by sketch #38 from Scrap a Sketch. Apart from the photo positions, I didn't stick partcularly closely to the sketch, adding a tag with my title to the top and a journalling card to the bottom, filling in the open spaces on the original sketch.

My title is just the street name, for want of anything better, and I ran the name of the church up the side of its photo block in a similar style to that used on my Vegueta page recently.

Volcanic Sands & Faraway Lands

I have another few pages to come from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, but I haven't printed all the photos yet so I'm moving on to our next island which was La Gomera. We had booked a hike in the rainforest here but it was cancelled due to a landslide blocking the road, which left us with a day in the very quiet town of San Sebastián instead. I've previously scrapped four of the six pages that I have planned so it shouldn't take too long to finish with this port of call.

I'd printed two photos for this page, both taken from the same place but looking at different things. I want them both to be in my album, but they are minor parts of the day and I didn't feel that either needed a whole 12x12 page. Therefore I split my page in two horizontally to give each photo its own space with separate titles and journalling. Those titles gave me some trouble as I wanted them to be linked in some way such as alliteration or rhymes. I eventually hit on Volcanic Sands (for the black sand of the main beach) & Faraway Lands (for a tiled floor commemorating Columbus' first voyage to the Americas).

All those As in the title meant that I chose to stamp it rather than run out of letters; I used a tile alphabet set, stamping each letter on white cardstock and cutting them out individually to look like stickers. The stamping looks a bit blotchy in the photo above, but it's much more legible in person. I had journalled on a couple of tags, which left the ampersand of my title 'floating' on the page so I added a flower below it and found something similar to go in the bottom tag.

Parque Doramas

Another Canary Islands page today and I'm still in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. I have been working chronologically and the cathedral should be next, but I haven't printed all the photos for that yet. Instead, I'm moving forward in the day to a walk through Parque Doromas, a landscaped area with statues and fountains, named after the 15th century chieftain who tried to repel the invading Spanish. 

I printed four photos in varying sizes, with no clear plan for the page. I shuffled 6x8 papers and smaller scraps about until I had something pleasing, and then stuck it all down.

My embellishment started from a small epoxy arrow that I found, with the word 'us' in it, which I held for the next page with a photo of us on it. I copied that with a die-cut arrow on each side and built small clusters behind them. The flowers came later, when I realised that the larger one fit perfectly around the word 'hello' and I repeated the motif with a smaller one by the bottom photo.

This page follows on immediately from the last, and has photos from the food market in the old town of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. I scraplifted myself for this one, basing it on the Cape Wrath page that I made for my Scottish cruise album.

This time I used a photo frame to hold my page title (in three fonts), switched to two photos in the bottom half, and moved my journalling to a new spot.

Vegueta

The last two posts were a brief diversion to catch up with unblogged pages that I made last year. In truth I am still scrapping our Canary Islands cruise and have a page today from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Vegueta is the old town, and my page is a double with photos of three of the old buildings. 

I laid a torn paper strip on each side of the page to hold my title (cut on my Silhouette) and journalling, using the centre part for my photos. I made the right hand side first with two photos of Columbus' House which I matted together on a stack of patterned papers with the building name up the side in Spanish. I then moved across to the left side and made two separate patterned paper stacks for individual photos of the town hall and the theatre, repeating some of the papers from one stack to another.

Looking at the page on screen now, it's obvious that the flower cluster at the bottom-left needs a small piece of the same filmstrip washi tape that's in the top-right cluster so I've gone back and added it (but not taken a new photo).

Dining @ Vasco

Woohoo! Three pages in a row for the same album. Let's see how long I can keep that up! 

This is another from our Canary Islands cruise, but it features one of the speciality restaurants onboard rather than anywhere we visited ashore. Vasco serves dishes from Goa in India, and I scrapped a couple of photos of the food with the aid of the January sketch from For the Love of Pretty Paper. I rotated the middle part to suit the orientation of my  photos and made the central panel into a pocket to hold a copy of the menu.

I've also ticked off the second birthday challenge from the same group, a Tic-Tac-Toe where I chose dots, patterned paper and 2x photos.

Charco de San Ginés

I have another page from Lanzarote today, one featuring a lagoon in Arrecife. It's my second DT page this month for Twilight Crafts. They've recently released a range of stencils and I was given JWS18 Circles Plain and Stripey which is A5 in size. (They do some designs in A4 too.)

I repeated the whole stencil across my 12x12 white cardstock, using Distress Oxide ink in Hickory Smoke, a colour which matches the grey in the Heidi Swapp papers that I am using for this album. 

You might spot a mistake in the stencil alignment on the right hand edge, but I hid that by trimming the cardstock down and matting it on a patterned paper. It's one that I don't like much and I don't think the design matches the rest of the collection very well, but it makes a good mat for a page.

I ran a couple of strips of paper across the page to divide it into two parts and added my title across the middle. The top part has an overview photo of the lagoon with a journalling card, while the bottom part has two detail photos.

I also made this page for one of the Birthday challenges at For the Love of Pretty Paper. We had three at the end of December to celebrate the group's 8th birthday and this was a 'This or That' challenge, for which I chose circles, mixed media, white background and camera.

Along the Prom

It's more than a year since our cruise to the Canary Islands and I really need to finish that album. I'm returning to Arrecife in Lanzarote today for a page with the  artworks and monuments that we saw along the prom.

I had four photos, which I arranged in an offset grid, using papers from the two collections that I chose for this album - Heidi Swapp's Carefree with Jen Hadfield's Peaceful Heart. I matted the two larger photos on dark cardstock and used the off-cuts to die-cut my title letters.

Castillo de San Gabriel

Another Canary Islands page today; this one's from Arrecife in Lanzarote. We visited a couple of fortresses here - I've already made a page for the Castillo de San José which is now an art gallery; today it's the turn of the Castillo de San Gabriel which now houses a museum of the history of the island.

I printed four photos in thee sizes and shuffled them around until I had an arrangement I liked. This was wider than it was tall so I added torn paper strips to the top and bottom of my page. The fort name fitted in neatly turned on its side next to my largest photo and I cut a row of chevrons from scraps to go across the middle of the page. I put the smaller photos on to tags and chose the flower die-cut for its size to fill the bottom row.

Let us Pray

I'm back in San Sebastian, La Gomera, for this page; I have said that I'm creating pages in random order and I mean it!

My page was inspired by Shimelle Laine's Colours and Quadrants class, but it doesn't follow any of her examples in particular. I created my page with four quadrants of paper in two colours and three photos, putting the photos in two separate blocks. 

I often use the name of the building as my title on pages like this, but this church  is La Iglesia de la Virgen de la Asunción, and that's a bit of a mouthful. My journalling mentions the fact that Christopher Columbus prayed here before his voyage to the new world and it's that that inspired the much simpler title that I did use.

I used a journalling card next to the top photo and a selection of die-cuts next to the bottom pair, concentrating on the colour blue from the other two quadrants, and adding a few florals, some stars and gems, and a spattering of white mist (which is almost invisible).
