Pages from Stockholm - Part 2

Last week I shared the first six pages from Stockholm on our Scandinavian cruise, and now I'm publishing the rest. We had visited the city before and visited the major attractions that interested us, so we spent some time on Stockholm's metro system, dubbed the longest art gallery in the world, looking at the artworks.

These are all pocket pages and, although I do use a few configurations of pocket page protectors, each of these has six 4x6 landscape pockets.

75. Universitetet / T-Centralen 

I gave the top four pockets here to Universitetet station which has a series of tiled panels devoted to Carl Linnaeus. The bottom two pockets are for T-Centralen, the only station which all three lines pass through; the walls of the red and green lines' platform are tiled with geometric patterns.

76. Odenplan / Thorildsplan / Rådhuset

Three stations this time, with two pockets apiece. Odenplan had a display from a local college; Thorildsplan is tiled with images in the style of early video games; Rådhuset has a variety of artefacts designed to look like they had sunk through the earth and reappeared in the station below.

77. Solna Centrum

This was the most impressive station, carved from the rock and painted with almost a kilometre of spruce forest below a sunset red sky. There are lots of smaller scenes along the walls highlighting nature, rural depopulation and environmental damage, and cases displaying smaller tableau. 

78. T-Centralen /Kungsträdgården

Back to T-Centralen on the blue line, which here is painted with calming blue vines and flowers. Then four pockets for Kungsträdgården; it means the King's Garden and the station is below a park of the same name where a palace used to stand. The bare rock walls have been adorned with casts of statues from the old palace and one end has a mock excavation site.

79. Underground Overground / Skeppsholmen

Back above ground, we visited the real Kungsträdgården and then walked over to another island called Skeppsholmen for coffee.

80. Stockholm Archipelago

My final page features the Stockholm Archipelago, the collection of 30,000 islands that we sailed through after we left the city.

That concludes my Stockholm scrapbooking and, since it was the last port I scrapped (though not the last we visited), it finishes off my Scandinavia album. I just need to have a check through all the pages for anything that's worked loose, or for any places that need a bit extra, or for places to add a few pieces that I like but haven't found a home on a page yet. Then I'll find an album and make a title card for the front cover.

Next up I have pages to make for my 2024 annual album and also for my 8x8 parkrun album, as I am trying to keep both of those up-to-date this year. I'll also be starting a new holiday album soon for this year's Mediterranean cruise.

Pages from Stockholm - Part 1

It's been a while since I last shared a round-up of pages, and that's because I have been busy enjoying the summer, interspersed with making a whopping total of eleven new pages for Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, which we visited on our Scandinavian cruise last summer. I'll be sharing those across two posts as there are so many.

I'll start with the sub-title page; I make one of these for every port we visit to divide the album into 'chapters' for each one. I have shared this one before but I'm repeating it with all the new pages for completeness.

70. Heart of the City

We moored right in the middle of Stockholm and went ashore by tender. I used two overlapping photos at the top of the page to make a panorama of the old town and added three smaller ones below with some street views.

71. Gamla Stan

First pocket page, with photos of four of the landmark buildings in the old town.

72. The Longest Art Gallery in the World / T-Bana / Östermalmstorg

We'd been to Stockholm before and seen some of the major sights, so this time we explored the T-bana, Stockholm's metro, where many of the stations are filled with art. This page starts with an introduction and a map, then the first station.

73. Stadion

Back to 12x12, partly as I wanted to make a feature of this station and partly because the photos didn't work well in a pocket page. Stadion station is carved from solid rock and painted blue with rainbows to remind people of the blue skies above. This page was my first August DT page for Twilight Crafts, using their Filmstrip cut-file in my layering.

74. Tekniska Högskolan

Another 12x12, on the back of the last. This is the station for the Royal Institute of Technology and is a tribute to various scientific discoveries. I split the page into a half and two quarters on different subjects.

Lost Stations

I recently shared a double page about The Cinder Track, the old Whitby to Scarborough railway line which is now a walking/cycling path, and concentrated on the path itself. Of course, a disused railway line has old stations too and I picked photos of four of them for this page.

A Different Mayflower

A few months ago I made an additional page for my 2019 album in order to fill in a gap in the story of our daughter's university choice (Yes to University of Sussex). That created a gap in the album which I'm returning to fill now. 

There were a couple of candidates for subjects that I hadn't previously scrapped, and I chose a photo of a steam engine called Mayflower. I had read something on line a few days earlier about her being driven along our local line en route to the Bluebell Railway in Sussex and I turned out early one Saturday to see her go past.

I picked my way through my scraps box for vintage/distressed papers in soft blues, rusty reds and muted browns (based off of the stripy paper to the left of my photo) and cut them into strips which I lined up across the page. I then tucked a mix of ephemera and die-cut labels in among the strips, making the cluster on the right larger than the one on the left.

Childhood Memories

I'm still in Dungeness for this page, which features engines from the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch narrow gauge railway. We used to visit the railway regularly when I was a child, and I've taken my son there too, so seeing the engines again made me get a bit nostalgic.

I've been using a four-colour palette for these pages, so I picked one pattern in each colour for a quadrants page this time and stacked my photos up in a column with scraps and branding strips tucked under the edge.

Old Timers

I don't necessarily blog my pages in the order I made them, preferring to group projects or albums together. Now that I've shared all my 2005 pages, I have a few oddments coming up.

Lottie Loves Paper are running a Summer Sketch Challenge until the end of next month, and this page came from the first one posted. 

I couldn't match the two portrait photos here, so went for landscape instead, with old photos from the National Tramway Museum in Crich. I considered rotating the whole sketch but the L shape of papers looked best left as it is. Those papers are old too, a collection called Vintage Charm which matched the tones in the photos perfectly.

I've stopped buying Thickers as the price keeps creeping up and I don't get very many titles per pack before I run out of critical letters. This means I am cutting more and more titles on my Silhouette - all the letters I need, in any colour and font I like. This time I layered patterned paper with an offset cut from kraft cardstock.

Follow the Tracks

I have another page from our Norfolk Broads holiday to share today. I am blogging them in the order they will come in the album rather than the order that I made them and this page comes from our second day. We moored our boat in Coltishall and took a trip from there to Wroxham on the Bure Valley Railway. 

I used a sketch from Shimelle's recent class Start with a Sketch for my page as its scattering of embellishments matched up with an NSD challenge from For the Love of Pretty Paper to do just that. I tried to combine it with a recipe challenge from Hey Little Magpie but couldn't manage to incorporate all the elements. However I did redirect it to their stitching challenge with a line of machine-stitching along the scalloped border strip.

La'al Ratty

'La'al Ratty' is old Cumbrian for 'Little Railway' and is the nickname of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway which we visited in 2018. I printed this set of photos for NSD that year but they didn't fit any challenges and have sat in my to-scrap pile ever since waiting for inspiration to strike.

I'm working my way through a set of challenges from a mini-cybercrop at For the Love of Pretty Paper which were based on the letters S-C-R-A-P, and I've reached A now. For this one we were asked to use our choice of acetate, acrylic, arrows and adventure, plus the colour amber. With very few printed photos at hand I picked up this set and worked with amber and arrows.

I'd originally printed these photos in an assortment of sizes and they take up a lot of the page space so it seemed best to set them in a block and then fill in the gaps with patterned paper. I chose blue for a good contrast with orange (amber) and pulled in the arrows via scraps of patterned paper left over from a recent page which were still on my desk.

Flåmsbana

One of Norway's biggest tourist attractions is the railway that runs from Flåm to Myrdal. It's just 20km long and climbs 866m on its journey, making it the steepest conventional railway in the world. We've been on it before (back in 2008) as part of an organised tour, but this time we decided to ride just over half-way up and then walk back down.

Scrapdolly's Page

This page is about the railway rather than the walk though, and is a scraplift of one from Scrapdolly at UKScrappers which I took on as part of a chain-scraplifting challenge (where we are lifting one another in turn to make a chain of related pages).

The trains themselves aren't particularly pretty so I picked two photos which show plenty of the scenery too. I kept many elements of Scrapdolly's page such as her light background, stripy paper layer, punched edges and journalling placement, but I moved my title and my embellishments have more geometric shapes than her free-flowing floral pieces.

My title "Flåmsbana" is the Norwegian for Flåm Railway, and I copied the font/logo from their website to cut it on my Silhouette.

Another of the 'Scrap in Colour' challenges from For the Love of Pretty Paper was a simple Pick 'n' Mix, to use something old and something new together. I combined this one with an ABC challenge from UKScrappers where I picked up T for Trains. 

My trains are just the engines really, a trio of steam engines on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway in Kent, a favourite place to visit from my childhood, but I haven't been back since my own children were small.

My 'something old' is the papers, labelled 2006 though I can't have had them that long, and my 'something new' is the gold letters, bought earlier this year.

Great Little Engines

I'm sharing another page today that I created by pairing up a 'starting point' with some old photos. I started off this page some time ago in order to kill off an Echo Park collection pack, and then left it for the right photos.

The ones I picked are from the Bluebell Railway in East Sussex, which I visited very many times as a child. I had two photos of the engines from this visit, so matted them together and then tucked in a punched strip next to the photo block. I hadn't stuck down the journalling card or all the circles previously so I rearranged those and fussy cut a camera from one of the scraps I'd kept from the collection.

My title gave me a lot of trouble as I couldn't find the right size, colour and font for the space available. I ended up using some small tiles above the journalling card, as being the best fit, but I'm still not entirely happy with it.

Schafbergbahn

Another Austrian page today, from the day we went up Schafberg, the mountain above the village of St Wolfgang which I featured on my last page. We used the cog railway, the Schafbergbahn, to get to the top, and then walked back down to the village of St Gilgen where we were actually staying.

I picked out three photos of the railway and used Sketch 134 from Sketch-n-Scrap for my page. My photos are a bit bigger so I adjusted the paper pieces to suit them.

This page came together really quickly for me; a combination of a good sketch, a pre-determined kit of papers to work with and copying embellishment elements from other Austrian pages all helped with this.

Snowdon

I'm still scrapping my way through old photos, filling in the gaps in my 2002 album. I've reached August, when we spent a week in North Wales. I've already made all of the one-photo and two-photo pages, so stand by for a run of three-photo and four-photo pages over the next week or so.

It's four photos today from Mount Snowdon; we caught the train to the top and then walked down the Llanberis path which runs fairly close to the railway.

Four 4x6 photos take a lot of space, so I didn't feel I had many design options, especially as they all have the same orientation. One block in the middle of the page, with patterned paper above and below.

Thomas and Friends

This is another challenge from our Facebook group for National Scrapbooking Day; our second one was set by Jennifer Grace and she gave us a sketch with a mixture of photo orientations.

I deliberately try to avoid this clash of orientations when I'm taking photos, and I had to go back to 1999 to find a pair that would fit the sketch. They're from a 'Thomas the Tank Engine' day at the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway. We took my son and my nephew there when they were toddlers. Unfortunately the two photos that I do have are of the engines, not the boys.

While I have been concentrating on the Facebook NSD challenges, I have borne others in mind while I worked, and I've managed to incorporate the criteria for Stash Challenge #26 at Scrap Our Stash. This month we need to create a page with stash items for each letter of the word EMBOSS. My items are: Enamel dots, paper from My Mind's Eye (yellow stripes), Blue background, Orange (punched circle), Stitching and the word Smile.

I had been trying to concentrate on pages from 2014, but when I saw this sketch from My Scraps and More, I wanted to use it straight away. I didn't have a suitable pair of current pictures around so I went all the way back to 2001 for a couple of 4x6 photos (one landscape and one portrait) that I was able to crop to squares. They're still larger then the ones in the sketch, but they worked fine.

Ffestiniog Railway

I'm jumping forward with the Birthday Stash-a-Thon challenges from Scrap Our Stash. I have already done the first 9 challenges (of 14), so have five to go. When I saw Challenge #12 - use game pieces - I immediately thought of my Scrabble-style letters and decided to use them on my next page if I could.

That next page uses the March Week 3 sketch from Let's Get Sketchy for two old photographs from the Ffestiniog Railway in Wales. Being old photos they were already printed at 4x6, but one was croppable and the sketch worked easily with the larger picture. My main change was just to move the title to the bottom right, where it runs over some empty space in my smaller photo.

An odd title, but this is the number of the engine in this set of photos - sadly it doesn't have a name. It's the engine that the boys were watching in my last page (Trainspotting) and this will lie opposite it in my album so I used the same supplies and a simple 'stack up three photos against a border' layout that I have used a couple of times before. It came together really easily as all the decisions had already been made.

Trainspotting

I'm returning to Shimelle's latest class now; Return to the Collection has six videos for six pages from a single collection pack. I have watched all six videos now, but this is only my second page from the class. It features a pair of offset photos, and some stamping on the background which runs under the photo block.

I had gutted the background paper of my first page (Hardwick Hall) when I made it so I started with that piece as my photo mat and pulled in some red cardstock as a second mat.

I do have photos of the trains as well, and my next page will be a companion page for this one.

Steam Trains

I haven't done much scrapping since I came back from my holiday last weekend, but the & Now For Something Completely Different class at UKScrappers is a must. This month's class was a page with four 4" x 4" photos, but when I was looking for a suitable quartet of pictures, I decided to adapt it. My photos are from 2003 and were taken on a day out on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. To be honest, I don't remember much about the day, so my journalling is just a few basic facts.

And my page for the March class in the '& now for something completely different' series at UKScrappers. I didn't follow the class entirely, but I did use the stamping and the trio of punched shapes. I dropped the idea of writing the title on a series of stickers (which I don't have) and I've swapped over the positions of the title and the journalling. I started with a large piece of flowery paper at the side of the photos, as in Shimelle's example, but I found that it dominated the page and so I swapped it for two smaller pieces, one each side. I am really liking the Basic Grey Plumeria papers that I also used on the last page. I only bought them a fortnight ago and I am fast running out.

I do want to do all the classes in this series, but April needs a large (A4) photo, I don't have one printed and I don't want to print one that large just for the sake of it. I think I will wait and do that page later in the year when I have a suitable picture.
