Summer Photography Scavenger Hunt - June Finds

The first month of the Summer Photography Scavenger Hunt organised by Mary-Lou at Patio Postcards is coming to an end and (as always) it's been a slow start here. I had intended to get out and take a few pictures last weekend, but the rain scuppered that plan.

These are just a few from earlier in the month and, if I'm honest, they were taken without any thought of the hunt.

7. What's in Bloom
Foxgloves on Denge Beach

9. Something Older Than Me
The Old Lighthouse at Dungeness (built in 1904 and replaced in 1961).

11. Round/Circular Shape
The raspberry and coconut cake that I made for my husband's birthday.

12. Something That is Cause for Celebration
Another birthday - our daughter's 21st.

Alt. C - The Most Beautiful Landscape Photo of the Season
Abandoned boats on Denge Beach.

Some of these will be replaced by the time we get to the end of September, but five photos done is a quarter of them in one month of the four allowed so I'm on track. I'm hopeful that July will bring some better photos as we have a staycation planned, a week of day trips form home.

Mary-Lou is hosting a link-up so if you pop over to her blog you'll find links to the other participants. And it's not too late for you to join in too.

TGO Challenge

Back to the 2018 album, and a page for The Great Outdoors Challenge, a trek across Scotland that my husband did for three years before Covid struck (and is set to do again next year). This was his second Challenge, and I asked him to choose a selection of photos to illustrate the experience, as I find it hard to pick the significant moments when I'm not involved in the story.

My layout is pretty conventional, the logical choice for a walking page. The photos are in roughly chronological order with a grid of six in the middle and a more varied arrangement to the sides.

The quadrilaterals of stripy paper at the sides came about because the paper is a diagonal stripe but the lines run at a shallower angle than the arrows print and they looked odd together, so I turned the stripes to run vertically instead.

Party Poppers Birthday Card

I have another card to share with you today, but just a plain, simple one. I had previously cut and backed the 'Happy Birthday' die-cut before abandoning it, so I looked through my papers for something celebratory which would match or contrast with the blue.

I found a repeating party poppers print and cut a box from it to be as large as I could while keeping to whole squares. I wish that I'd matted it on some more blue cardstock, but it's too late now.

Father's Day Card

Happy Father's Day to anyone who's celebrating today.

I use this month's card sketch from Stick It Down to make a card for my dad, choosing it as the three squares on the sketch just shouted to me to add the letters D-A-D.

I used a 5x7 card blank, covered it with a leaf print paper and matched the leaf colour with a scrap of cardstock for the strip across the card. I chose a complementary blue paper for the squares and topped them with corrugated kraft letter stickers. Finally I copied the star from the sketch with one which I die-cut from the same cardstock as the horizontal strip.

Make a Splash

I've been trying to concentrate on 2018 scrapping, but I got some 2017 photos printed too for NSD; these didn't match up to any of the challenges I did then but I've made a page now. I took dozens of photos at a family barbecue that summer, and then chose just five for my page.

I based my page around the camera print paper, with a split background using the largest piece I had left, and pulled in a few single-colour papers from the same collection.

Cocktails Birthday Card

I'm sharing a quick card today, one which I based on the latest sketch from Sketch-n-Scrap.

I went for a portrait card and used just one paper to cover it, with a contrasting scalloped strip. I stamped my sentiment on a die-cut circle and considered turning it into a rosette, but I found that to be too cluttered and I preferred a cleaner look.

I added a few clear gems to the card, covering some of the fizzy bubbles on the paper.

Loughrigg Tarn

I'm returning to my 2018 album for this page; it's a project that's nearing completion but I will need to place another photo order before that can finally happen.

We visited Cumbria twice that year; this page is from our December trip and a short walk to Loughrigg Tarn. There's no colour in the tarn photos but I was drawn to the pink of our friend's coat and then to an ancient pink and brown paper from Basic Grey.

I'm currently taking Shimelle Laine's Half and Half class, composed of a series of process videos for pages all made on backgrounds composed of two 6x12 blocks; I teamed my pink and brown paper with a pink diagonal stripe for a page based on her lesson 8. It's an unusual combination for me, but one that I quite like and I plan to repeat it when I make a page from our other walk that weekend (using the remaining two halves of my papers).

Red, White and Blue

Last NSD page now, and I confess that it's the one I like the least. I made it for the 'Abstract Art' challenge from For the Love of Pretty Paper which was to make a monochromatic page and to use large brushstrokes.

I started by looking for a photo which would suit a single-colour page, and found one of my sister at a fancy dress barbecue. The theme for the event was red, white and blue, and she dressed as a tin of blue paint (also available in red and white), which tied in with the brush strokes required.

I based my page on Sketch-n-Scrap's Sketch #225, making my background from a mix of painted brushstrokes, washi tape and paper scraps.

By the Sea

Back to the NSD scrapping now, and I have two pages left to share. I'm still back in the photos archive for this one, which I made for the 'Dadaism' art-themed challenge from For the Love of Pretty Paper. They asked us to use new stash and either a new technique or one we haven't done for a while. My newest stash is the beach-themed Salt & Sunsets collection from Rosie's Studio which led me to old beach photos of us as children,  and I chose stencilling for my technique as this meant I could double up with Hey Little Magpie's stencilling challenge.

Summer Photography Scavenger Hunt

It's June! And that means the return of the Summer Photography Scavenger Hunt run by Mary-Lou at Patio Postcards, which will run until the end of September.

She's set a list of 20 items and three alternatives, bearing in mind that many participants are still living under some level of coronavirus restrictions. As Mary-Lou herself says: "There are some searches for at home, close to home or away from home.  I hope some items encourage you to think creatively & some that may require an open eye to find."

Her list for this summer is:

  1. A Breakfast of Champions
  2. Favourite Time of Day
  3. Something To Represent Home But Not The Building

Alt B: a local landmark
Alt C: the most beautiful landscape photo of the season

Just reading through the list is sparking a few ideas and I'm looking forward to  getting started. All being well, we will be going on holiday in August and that should throw up some good photo opportunities too.

If you'd like to join in, just hop over to Mary-Lou's original post and leave a comment; then she'll add you to the first monthly hop on 30th June.
